Johnson & Johnson's single-shot Covid-19 vaccine shows 66% efficacy in global trial, but 85% efficacy against severe disease

quote:

Johnson & Johnson's Covid-19 single-shot vaccine was shown to be 66% effective in preventing moderate and severe disease in a global Phase 3 trial, but 85% effective against severe disease, the company announced Friday.

The vaccine was 72% effective against moderate and severe disease in the US, the company said.
It's a striking difference from vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna, and it may give pause to people uncertain about which vaccine to get or when they can get one. The vaccines already on the market in the US are about 95% effective overall against symptomatic Covid-19, with perhaps even higher efficacy against severe cases.

Not sure how the trial was structured but at first glance, this appears lower than background levels.

Also, just to be fair, it was less effective against milder cases apparently than Moderna and Pfizer, but was very, very successful against extreme cases, from what I'm reading.

I thought that was low too but didn't know that a typical flu vaccine has a similar effectiveness

I have seen some Dr on twitter say that had Moderna or Phizer done their trials at the height of infection like J&J their efficacy would be lower. A lot of Dr believe while still very effective the 90% plus numbers are likely not accurate.

Severe cases are way under the 15% mark. I'd be interested to hear how the study comes to this conclusion.

Typical flu is about 70%, and greatly reduces the effects in most people that get the flu while having the vaccine.

They are thinking the same thing here, about as effective as the flu vaccine, drastically reduces symptoms of those that get COVID.

This wouldn't surprise me. I remember at one point during the summer the folks in England saying there wasn't enough virus out in the wild for the vaccine trials.

Yeah but which one makes you a fast zombie and which one makes you a slow zombie? Because if I'm gonna be one I wanna be a fast zombie.

But just think of all the talcum powder in there that may lead to various cancers.

The JNJ numbers are from a study of 45,000. The earlier vaccine studies were off of like 900 people, the earlier "success rates" are complete speculation.

Well, this is the vaccine most of us are going to get, so 66% will have to be good enough.

Yeah after reading more, it is better than the CNN headline would have you believe.

It will be interesting what happens with this with reports of people not showing up to get their second shot with moderna/pfizer. On a large epidemiological scale what’s better-getting a massive amount completely vaccinated at a 66/85% efficacy. Or that same population half fully vaccinated at a 95% efficacy half with only one shot at a 40-50% efficacy.

Okay, just read the entire article. Should have led with this:

quote:

"Across all geographies, across all variants, we see 85% protection" against severe disease, he said. That trend increased over time, with no severe cases in the vaccinated group after day 49, according to the company.
From one month after the shot, all hospitalizations and deaths occurred in the placebo group.

Well millions of people will have had the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine by mid February, so we will have a shitload of data on their efficacy.
