Has anybody been to Japan in late December or for New Year's? I was initially thinking Europe but now I see that you can get round trip fares from LAX to Tokyo for only $1000 during the days we'd be going. Seems like better bang for buck than Europe which is $1600 for same dates.

So idea would be:

4-5 days in San Diego/Beverly Hills (SWA points for flight there)
10 days/nights in Japan (6 in Tokyo / 4 in Osaka/Kyoto) with most hotels free Starwood

Total spend $4k plus tons of hotel points, but acquiring enough Airline points to probably make NEXT YEAR to Europe free

Yeah everywhere will be cold/rainy in December though. My argument for Rome and Paris was that the museums would be warm and there would be relatively few people. It was more or less set, only needed to pull the trigger but then the airfare has gone up from $1050 r/t multi city to $1650 r/t for the same dates. Kind of makes me re-think b/c usually Japan is the destination that is $2500 r/t.

Plus, we'd be getting 4-5 days in SoCal this way and New Year's in Japan is supposed to be amazing - it's their biggest holiday by far. It's like our Christmas and New Years and Halloween rolled into one.

I'm envious. Japan over Christmas and New Years would be a helluva experience. Want a travel partner? I'm a wild and crazy guy (no homo).

Not thailand. Or new zealand. thailand in november was lovely and december supposed to be even better. Same for Costa rica, nicaragua, and panama. All lovely. South africa was also lovely in December.

The wife really wants to go to japan, I just don't know if we can afford it. I am not a baller like you.

That's a great time to be in Japan. Make sure to find a shrine on New Year's Eve to make an offering and listen to the ringing of the bells. Then go for drinks/soba and stay out walking until 5 am. I spent the most memorable New Year with Mrs Pimp in Kyushu doing just that. I would also recommend watching people making mochi and beating it with those big pallets. That's really, really cool to watch.

Bring lots of money. Japan isn't cheap. My cab ride from Narita (Tokyo's airport) was over $250. You can take the rail, but I had too much gear. But, I would spend whatever I could to go to Japan. It is one of my favorite places on the planet.

Never been, but it's on the bucket list to go there, and winter would be my preference. I hear the skiing is fantastic!

Don't have kids yet and were agnostic but initial plan was to spend it in Vatican City or notre dame on Christmas Eve which would have been amazing place to get our JC on

Yeah the hotels look insanely expensive but fortunately I have a ton of points from work and would cash them all in to make the stays free. I'm sure the food will be super expensive though.

Yeah I would recommend taking a train outside to the countryside, and finding a rustic village. The key to enjoying Japan imho is getting out of the City and into the boonies and meeting every day Japanese people . New Years would be one of the 2 or 3 best days to do that (along with Obon, Coming of Age Day and Cherry blossom festivals) because everybody is walking around outside and celebrating. The best day in my opinion is Tanabata Matsuri Day, a day for parades, funny skits, fireworks etc but that's in Summer time.

My last trip to Japan was 5 nights. Luckily I had hotel points or that would have been like $3800 for my room. I highly recommend the park Hyatt. It's where they filmed lost in translation and the service is second to none. It's also in a great location.

I think draft beer at most places I went to was like $16 a pint.

I had fugu one night and it was $600 a plate. I'm not rich or anything, work paid for everything.

I agree the countryside is awesome, but to experience Tokyo is amazing. Shinjuku Station makes Time Square look like Grand Isle. I normally hate big cities, but that one is insane.
