Television footage showed ships moving out to sea from Fukushima harbours, as the meteorological agency warned of a tsunami of 3 metres (10 feet) for Fukushima, where Tepco's Daiichi nuclear plant was devastated in a March 2011 quake and tsunami.

The Japan Meteorological Agency put the earthquake at magnitude 7.3 and issued a tsunami warning for Fukushima Prefecture and urged immediate evacuations. It said tsunamis were expected to arrive "imminently" in the region.

Tsunami advisories were issued for a wide area of Japan's Pacific coast, including Miyagi and Iba prefectures.

Reports of damage from the quake weren't immediately available. But a 3-meter (10-foot) tsunami was expected at any moment, the national broadcaster NHK said on air report.

"Please evacuate right now," it said. "Don't stop. Don't try to go back."

The expected tsunami was expected to cause extra damage on top of any from the earthquake, the Japan weather agency said.

The U.S. Geological Survey revised its rating to magnitude 6.9. Both agencies said the quake was recorded at 6 a.m. Tuesday (4 p.m. ET Monday) at a depth of only 6.2 miles; shallow quakes generally cause more destruction because they're so close to the surface.

FWIW, the 2011 tsunami had waves of 10-24 feet high in major areas of Japan. The wave ran up 127 feet high on some mountains though.

On the live stream, the sirens are terrifying, especially since it's in a different language. I couldn't even imagine being there wondering WTF is about to happen.

Not a direct reply to you because I know you have the sarcasm font on.

If there is a disaster we will once again be amazed by the dignity of the Japanese people in crisis and how swiftly they come to each others aid and deal with the situation.

A guard kept watch over a deserted street Wednesday in Namie, a town north of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station in northeastern Japan, where disaster struck five years ago Friday.
