I went to Jamaica years ago while on a cruise. We stopped at this incredible jerk restaurant (after climbing a waterfall ). My sister had to use the restroom and I escorted her because the restaurant was very...authentic.

While waiting for her, this dirty looking Jamaican comes around the coroner with a machete around his waist. He asked me if I wanted to go off and have a smoke. Sure thing, machete-wielding local, let's run off and smoke weed somewhere remote. I declined his polite offer.

Cool story is cool.

Friend's brother, who is cop, was on a cruise last year with a stop in Jamaica. They were on some sort of tour bus in one of the bigger cities, near a bunch of tourist attractions. Two teenagers approached the tour director and tried to take his gold necklace he pushed them away and they put two bullets in him...

Damn y'all are quick on the draw. Went to take a growler and came back to 19 comments. Staying at Couples Swept Away in Negril and the only place I'm really wanting to go to is Rick's Cafe.

this is what we did.

we hired a cabbie through Rasta Tours for the day and had him take us around the island and sho us things the normal tours wont. he took us to an awesome place to eat, showed us a couple of the schools, and things like that.

no clue why anyone would want to visit a place where this would even be a question

Two friends of mine rented a car and traveled the countryside. They got baked and drunk the whole time and were only robbed once.

I would like to say yes, but based on my last trip, i have to say no, generally. not at night anyway.

Rick's Cafe

is that the place by the cliff diving? we did that during the day (obviously). that was pretty badass and felt safe enough.

i had a cabbie take us to a nightclub and basically serve as our body guard. It was incredibly sketchy even with that.

even there, an american girl went missing while we were there and i got the shake down by some fake cops, who got in a showdown with some real cops on the beach. luckily i was a pretty fast runner back then.

where else have you been?

Montego Bay and Ocho Rios are fine from my experience.

you shouldn't let fear of other cultures deter you from exploring.

If you want to leave the resort, book a day where the taxi can take you on a few planned stops.

Our day consisted of the taxi taking us and a few others to the duty free shops (which were surprisingly nice), ending at Rick's Cafe at sunset. The driver sat outside the spots and had a meetup time for leaving.

On your way to these destinations, we rode through the slums and were enlightened as to why we made a good decision not venturing out alone.

The hassling is bad enough on the beach, I couldnt imagine being out there on the streets alone.

ETA: I stayed in Negril - Sunset at the Palms. Forewarning, 7 mile beach is not private. You will obviously have people peddling drugs, and you will have women trying to braid your wifes hair, sell you Bob Marley paintings and other shite. Prayers sent if you run into King Louie.

Yes, it's definitely safe if you avoid Kingston but I recommend booking excursions through tour companies rather than free wheeling it on your own.

Jamaica's economy is highly dependent upon tourism and the Jamaican people are well aware, so they cater to visitors.

Meh, I felt safe here but the higher population made it hard to relax.

Is fine, but I didn't enjoy it as much.

If you did what I do for a living you'd fear other cultures too.
