IYO, is someone "self made" if their parents paid their way through school?

But otherwise didn't get much from them (small million dollar loans, job at daddy's company, etc.)

Paid for tuition and board or paid for tuition, board, drinking money, spending money, etc while the student never worked?

I'd be willing to say self made if they had help from their parents and made their own way

They just had a significant leg up

Although, the people that pay their own way through school might have better money management skills once they graduate

Is this the American dream now? To make a comfortable living so that your kids can have a better future so you can shite on them for having an easy life?

People are so weird.

Whether I can afford the world for my kids or not when they turn 18 (15 years to go), they will have a job while in college and will have to pay bills with the money they earn. There is no better skill in life than learning how to work and how to pay bills responsibly.

lol wut?

this is america, 2016. there is no such thing as 'self made' because we're not some third world country without power & plumbing and nobody going through college is paying for it themselves.

I always thought school would have been harder had my parents paid for everything. I would have probably partied out!

I had to work my way through college and took loans plus TOPS. I never slipped in school because I was paying for it.

self made has more to do with your business acumen and hard work at your career than how you funded your undergraduate education.
I never heard the theory that "self made" excludes people whose parents paid all or part of their undergraduate education.

Yes. Street orphans aren't the only ones that can qualify as "self made"

Not in my opinion. Self-made is just that, the individual does it all.

Yes. An education doesn't guarantee shite. You still have to apply what you have learned. Now if you graduate and your Dad makes you vice president of the company then you are not self made.

So athletes aren't self made if they get a scholarship to play in college, which in turn gets them looked at by pro scouts and eventually makes them millions?

You can't claim to be self made unless you have provided yourself with food, clothing and shelter since coming out of the womb.

I may be an exception for sure, but I worked for maybe 12 months total while in school for 6 years. And the 6 years weren't due to partying, 5 years for an engineering degree (pretty standard) and 1 due to fricking up scheduling and having one year with like 4 hours in the fall and 3 in the spring (capstone). I won't lie, it was AWESOME thinking back. Lots of free time, especially in that last year. But I made decent grades, have a good career for now, good work ethic, and am actually pretty responsible with money.
