Basically the City of Birmingham needs to step up to the plate and make some long term decisions about what they are willing to fund and what revenue generating sports programs they want in B'ham.

IMHO, the City owe's UAB - it is one of the largest employers in the state and UAB literally is what puts Birmingham on the freaking map, in a good way. They should pony up the lion's portion of a UAB football field IMO.

Yes, The Westin.

They are supposed to start in 2016 and tear down all of 20/59 running through downtown. They won't even let cars park under it any more because of all the concrete falling.

A small dome that could house UAB football, NCAA basketball, and conventions is certainly doable. I agree that the NFL is prob out of the question, but MLS or possibly the NBA would work for a city if our size. Hell, New Orleans has both the NFL and the NBA and the metros are basically the same size.

You have to do these things in steps. The first step was a baseball field downtown. The second will be a basketball arena that could hopefully attract the NCAAT, possibly the SECT, and other events. This will get laughed at but I think with the way things have improved in Bham over the last few years, Bham will be an NBA *caliber* town in the next few years if things continue to progress. That doesn't mean we'll get one, but I think we'll be at or around that level. In any event, we won't be at that level if we don't have a first class arena. The BJCC is a dump.

Birmingham could have snagged an NFL team as late as the 1990's when thhe last round expansion occured had their been an ownership group and commitment from the city for a stadium. They lost that race to Nashville, J'vlle, and Charlotte. All of the alternative leagues like the old WFL and USFL drew good support.

If Memphis or OKC can support an NBA team, no reason B'ham couldn't...it's going to take a commitment from the city becuase the BJCC is not a modern arena

I agree. I am sure the city was one of the most vocal at wanting UAB football back.(other than Auburn fans)

The only thing I see as a problem is Birmingham doesn't want to tear anything down. You're going to have to make space downtown if you are going to put anything down here.

That should be the goal. I think we're certainly capable of supporting an NBA team either now or in the near future.

Geez. I've learned more about UAB football than about Auburn football on this board lately.

Not sure why that would be, there is plenty of bad areas that need to go...anything would be better.

HAHA. F**K BAMA! Geaux UAB!

ETA: I don't feel like reading the whole thread, but what is the process for bringing a team back? Do they have to start out back in FCS and work their way back?

Don't be such a mouth breather every single day. Try contributing something to thread besides your pathological hate for Bama. We get it already.......

Just listened to the press conference. Watts did a really good job. Of course, Scarbinsky did not ask one single question about Paul Bryant Jr who he blamed for the closing of the football program. Not one question. Just a desperate plea for clicks

LOL. Never seen a press conference like that. Watts did a TERRIBLE job. Constantly flustered and walking off. He was pretty obviously getting angry.

Just he explained how the fund raising turned it around. He explained that UAB was not going to commit more than $20 million to athletics. Didn't give a definitive timeline which was smart.

We watched two different press conferences. He literally walked off the podium twice and returned twice to answer questions and he was not getting angry. Most of the questions were fairly straight forward except maybe the last one and he said "we're moving forward"

He walked on and off repeatedly while people were asking questions. At least he didn't completely not take questions at all so I'll give him credit for that. But you could literally hear his hatred for reversing the decision in his voice. He did not want to be there or to bring any sports back. That should've been clear by his demeanor.

Then they will never get a new stadium unless the city does it. Should have just kept the program shut down.

Yes. The press conference had ended but he still took more questions. As for his hatred I think you are hearing things you wanted to hear
