I figured the downward pressure of it shooting up hit him in the head and killed him, but I wouldn't think that would've resulted in the above quote you mentioned.

The mortar shell must have jammed and exploded. Was really stupid with fireworks one time, fired a mortar shell from a tube on top of our friends car one time, stupidly put it on the sun roof. The downward force didn't shatter the glass, surprisingly, so I doubt it would have enough force to break someone's skull or spine.

I was really little when one of those spinning fireworks that you set on the ground took off and went at my sister setting her hair on fire. It's something that sounds funny when you say it, but watching it happen was terrifying. I never joined in with my neighbors who shot bottle rockets at each other. Didn't want the darwin award.

I'm way different now, bud. This was back when I was in my early 20's and hanging out with a bunch of other drunk military people. We had 2 big Rubbermaid containers full of fireworks and entirely too much booze. At some point someone started shooting Roman candles at people and it just went from there. Pretty soon there were a dozen people running around the yard shooting fireworks at each other.

The dumbest part is whenever someone would run back to the boxes of fireworks to get more ammo, people were still shooting at them. It's amazing that the entire box didn't go off at some point.

I'm thinking that maybe he put the mortar in the tube upside down... instead of of shooting up into the air and exploding it remained in the tube and exploded right on top of his skull.

Even that wouldn't likely blow up his head. The "launching" charge on those things is typically pretty weak. It's the second charge that really goes boom.

i misread the context. i thought that his friend was with DPS and was allowing tomfoolery to go on.

interestingly, i set off fireworks with a guy that works for TXDPS this week and he was annoyingly careful.

carry on with the downvotes.

That's funny, but when I first read the subject line, I thought it was our Gaston.

i'm trying to say that it sucks that he dies, but i find irony that a person who works at public safety allowed that sort of shenanigans to go on.

Agreed. I mean if the guy can't look after every human in the state 24 hours a day he doesn't deserve to stay employed.

Maybe so. This quote from the article has me confused though:
quote:

Devon said that his brother was holding a lighter which made the firework 'go off accidentally.'

You drop mortars into the tube, and then light the REALLY LONG fuse. So I'm not sure how having a lighter in your hand would've done anything unless you were intentionally trying to do something stupid (more stupid than shooting one from the top of your head). Maybe he tried to light the shell itself?

Like I said, it's a weird situation, and it feels like we are missing some information.

That's what I was saying. If it was upside down the launching charge wouldn't do much... but it would still be in the tube when the second, larger explosion occurred.

Or as some others have stated, the launching charge could have failed keeping the mortar in the tube when the second charge went off.

Maybe the mortar went into the tube upside down. We did that accidentally last year and nearly blew a hole in the dock.
