My inlaws got travel protection to travel for my wedding(it was in October in florida...suggested everyone get it in case of hurricanes and it messing up flights). MIL got violently ill on plane. Had to be wheeled off plane at layover in Houston by medics. Airline placed them in hotel there...they stayed 2 nights. Had to take cab to an urgent care to see a doctor for motion sickness patches so she continue traveling. They missed 2 nights of their condo stay in Florida. Had to pay $$$ at urgent care since out of network, etc, etc.
Travel insurance reimbursed them for all those expenses. They made sure to keep all receipts though, so made process smoother.
Also...if you are going out of the country...unlikely your health insurance covers you there. What if something happens there? Travel insurance usually covers all that and will pay for you to be flown back to the US if you need a higher level of care than can be provided at some island hospital. Trust me...something you hope you don't need to use...but will be glad you paid the $100 for it if something bad happens. My peace of mind to be able to fully enjoy my vacation is worth $100.
ETA: Credit cards won't cover all your health stuff, they will just cover cancelled flights, etc. Main reason to get travel coverage when going out of country...health coverage.

I was in a hurricane last September. Get the insurance, at least for your flight. Or move it to October/November and save some money.

I think I'm gonna get it, thanks for all the info.

Just cashed in a policy for about $4k on a trip to France. If the trip is costly and there's a legit chance of not going, buy it and sleep better.
But read the fine print.
And FWIW, this was the only time I have ever purchased it.

Yeah my cousin planned this expensive trip to Italy. Was gonna do some cruise there. 17k trip total. His mom ends up in ICU right before trip so has to go be with her. Lost all that money cause he didn't pay for trip insurance.

Check you cc's terms and your frequent traveler bennies (if you have any). You probably already have some protection.

I use the Delta Platinum AMEX so I am pretty much always set on Delta.
However, before I had the card, I booked a flight with a discover card, canceled my ticket, and got refunded. Had I not bought it with that card, I think I would have only got a credit with the airline.

I'd be out several thousand $ if I'd bought travel insurance for all my trips. Have never bought it or needed it. If you self insure for things that aren't catastrophic you will come out ahead in the long run.
