Is there a more "attention whore" move than announcing you're leaving Facebook?

Why can't people just get off the site without proclaiming it?

Oh, I don't know. Maybe as a simple courtesy to friends and the people following you?

Why would someone be on facebook so much that people notice immediately when they aren't using it regularly?

That seems insane to me. I am facebook's first generation when only young people with .edu emails could use it. It used to be great, now its just garbage for the most part.

Mine is so private you can see my name and picture and that's it.

Well, there are people who post a message stating they are going to cull their FB friend list to include only those people with whom they are truly close. They will close the post by asking their FB friends to post a comment as to why they should be kept as friends. I have had 2 FB "friends" do this - I unfriended with the quickness. Have seen this PPP up on other feeds as well.

In my experience, those who announce they are leaving Facebook never stay gone.

As much as I hate facebook, it's how a lot of people communicate with each other, especially if you're far apart. If it's just a "you won't be able to get in touch with me this way anymore" type of post, nothing wrong with it.

You can checkout any time you like, but you can never "leave".

If they are not your friends in real life, why are you shutting down your only means of communication with them?
