Like I mentioned earlier, I have always thought being a cop would be fun. What is the major differences between regular police and state police? I know it's much harder to become a trooper and many have degrees. I know they pay much more than locals. That's about the extent of what I know of the differences. Also, I know I will have to read past many cop bashing post to get real answers so I'm expecting that.

Your head gets really sweaty in those trooper hats.

State Police are more effective and longer reaching than a highway patrol and state patrol. They have the same LEO powers and authority as a city cop and sheriffs deputy, only that a Trooper's power and jurisdiction covers the whole state regardless of the Troop he is assigned to in this state. State Police not only works traffic and the interstate, they also specialize in crimes that are not typically investigated by the local departments and they also help the locals with other cases that are too advanced for them or there is a conflict of interest there. For example, a lot of Louisiana State Troopers are carrying out LEO duties in New Orleans now as if they're local officers because of NOPD being understaffed and they're being paid to do so.

Highway Patrol and State Patrol is much more limited in its scope and authority as its name suggests and they only work the highways and have a few niche divisions that are not as effective as local departments.

City cops and sheriffs deputies are the meat and potatoes of law enforcement and are much more important and visible than state troopers. They do your basic peace keeping, crime investigation, run the courts and local jails, and share highway and interstate work with state troopers.

Because they only accept the best of the best. You have to have college degrees and/or military experience to qualify for entrance into their academy.

Why else do you rarely hear about Louisiana State Troopers having shady and TPOS shenanigans like local cops usually do? LSP is the most professional law enforcement agency in the state. Although Ascension Sheriff is not far behind.

Whenever the laws of any state are broken, a duly authorized organization swings into action. It may be called the State Police, State Troopers, Militia, the Rangers, the Stormtroopers, the Klingons... or the Highway Patrol. These are the stories of the men whose training, skill and courage have enforced and preserved our state laws.

Should just go work for SELU PD, apparantly Southeastern's cops are paid better than the parish police and city police

Jurisdiction. State troopers have state-wide jurisdiction, city police only have jurisdiction within the city limits of their respective city, and sheriffs' deputies have parish-wide jurisdiction.

Come speeding through MS and find out the difference for yourself.

They are in top physical shape. Very rarely do you see a fat out of shape MHP.

They are bad asses, and almost all will write their own mother a ticket.

In Ak, troopers are pretty badass. Particularly the ones who have to fly in to native villages.

They are far more professional than the local cop.

Being a state trooper is boring as hell 99% of the time. I've known several and most went back to city/county police forces.

He did say rarely. Unfortunately every power position in the world has someone trying to take advantage. That's the unfortunate part of human nature.
