I have pre Katrina friends and post Katrina friends. Many pre Katrina friends are shattered and busy with their lives but damn some of these people I was very close to and now if I hear from them once every two years it's a lot. Granted I have been very busy since the storm and haven't made much of an effort either to keep in touch.

You are also getting older so you start paying Attention to things on a broader scope.

My kids obviously have no clue how messed up some things in the world are

How could you even ask this question?

The world is getting much much better. 50 years ago you barely would find out what was happening in another state, much less around the world. Its just the travel of information.

News is sensationalized now more than ever. The media loves bad stories that catch your eye and gain clicks.

More coverage.

Consider our supposed gun problem in the US. With the coverage of murders/mass murders, you would think we were at the most dangerous point in our history.

Contrary to popular belief, we are currently at about a 40 year low.

You would never know that if you watched the news.

This is just false. Info has always traveled, just at a slower pace, and in a more filtered fashion. This modern news infotainment fantasy has created a cycle of false news reporting and rumor propagating.

There is too much information. It's making people naturally question everything as nobody knows what to believe. Then, they read little, with the vast majority of their information coming from the TV.

Prime example is the Malaysian air flight. Sandy Hook. People demand accuracy and response within hours, sometimes minutes, and the more prolifically horrible it sounds, the more fear it induces, the more people tune in.

More coverage. The world is actually getting much safer by the day. You didn't have 24 hour news channels in the 70s and the internet makes things spread like wild fire.

safety/crime wise? things are better

society is going down the shitter, however. nearly half of the country has their hand out and that's getting worse by the year.

Crime in America is drastically lower than it was 20 years ago, about at 1960's levels. I'd say there's a lot more info out there today so it "seems" to be getting worse.

I tend to agree with this. The progression from Monarchies expanding their empires through slavery and genocide to the world we know today is quite astounding.

I was thinking about society itself too. Young people now act like they are owed something. We are too dependent on the Government and technology. We don't know how to self sustain anymore. We arent taught how to survive in the wild??

And what of our politicians? They all seem more corrupt now more than ever.

Our dependency on Fossil Fuels is also scary. That resource won't last forever....

It's better today than it was yesterday, and better yesterday than it was the day before. It's the best time in human history.

Unfortunately so many people can't/won't accept that because of the 24 hour news cycle and because even though more people have more freedoms than ever before in history, some of them are using their freedoms in ways some don't like...hence the "getting worse" comments.

There's not a time in human history I'd prefer living.

This and lots more. I could expound on it for 40 paragraphs but I don't have the energy. Society is getting worse very quickly. It's scary to think of where this country will be in 100 years.

The United States and the world are getting worse and it will continue to worsen till Jesus comes again. That's what the Bible says and I believe it.

I don't think this is a new phenomena

technology is not a bad thing, as for the government, most of the entitlements were started many decades ago

guess you have a point here, although how big a deal this actually is can be debated

I wonder if people who ask themselves this question are simply ignorant of somes of the types of things that have happened throughout human history. At least in this country we are an incredible amount less violent and more protected and safe than most points in human history.

No...it's incredibly exciting to imagine where humanity will be in 100 years. Think of the world in 1914 versus today. With the speed at which technology is advancing, where will we be as a species in 2114?

But then, I don't care if homosexuals get married...so I do have a slightly different set of priorities.
