Same reason all derogatory terms became offensive. They were used in offensive ways. A word has no meaning until you give it meaning. The N-bomb wouldn't be offensive if it was never used to refer to African Americans the way it was/is.

quote:

I don't get how oriental is offensive at all and I'll argue that all day.

My wife used to take my son to a play group where there was an Asian (not sure exactly where she's from) woman that she got to know a little. The other day she was trying to explain who she was talking about since I don't remember names well and for some reason, she had a brain fart and couldn't get the word Asian out and said "you know the oriental woman I'm friends with". I busted out laughing. It's just weird to describe a person like that. I asked her if the lady looked like a rug . Told her to please never say that to an Asian persons face. I don't know exactly why it's offensive, but I just know it is. So why bother.

Goes back to the railroad times I'm sure. Where I'm sure they weren't treated the best and the word Chinamen started to build a negative connotation.

Asian-American

if they were born in an asian country then this would be the correct term. since they were probably born here, i would just say american.

It's all just the way words, vowels and consonants, sound when they are strung together.

These sound fine and no one is offended:

France - Frenchman
English - Englishman

Mostly citizens of certain countries are named by adding -n, or -an, to the end;

South Africa - South African
Egypt - Egyptian
Canada - Canadian
Mexico - Mexican
Cuba - Cuban

Then there's Spaniard (not spanishman), Filipino( not Phillipian), and Dane (not Denmarkian). Who knows why? Who cares?

Making an issue about Chinaman (should it be Chinan, or Chino, or Chinian?) is random and absurd. No pejorative is intended nor should it be perceived that way.

You could just use the word Asian. Don't see why that's so difficult.

If you are a real American, not much offends you. Certainly not this. It is only pussy fart douche bag leftist-surrenderist appeasing to enemies but attacking your own SJW liberal buttfricks who have been allowed too much power even though they make up a tiny percentage of the population to have too large of a voice in setting the rules and being made to think that their pussy arse fringe whacko opinions actually matter.

I was being facetious. Was paraphrasing a scene from The Big Lewbowski.
