Is the phrase "we thought it was fireworks" the stupidest comment ever?

They have interviewed 3 bystanders in Dallas and they have all said "we thought it was fireworks". Umm...you were at a protest. You didn't think for a second that someone might be popping caps?

Dude, it's pretty natural human behavior to be in denial for a few seconds once the very worst case scenario that you'd never think you'd encounter happened. I may have been thinking the same thing for a second or two.

I heard fireworks a couple of miles away literally 15 minutes ago. It was just the 4th of July

There's a dill weed in my neighborhood still firing off his stash from the 4th. Should I assume he's capping folks instead?
