Calmes, by the time you notice TBNs getting low with conventional oil, it's picked up enough crap to alter the properties of synthetic oil significantly as well.
Wrong. Synthetic oils offer higher detergency which allows them to suspend contaminates better for the oil filter to pick them up. They don't shear down as badly, they have lower volatility, and better oxidation stability which are all properties that allow them to handle blow-by better than conventional oils.

Today's conventional oils are fantastic.
They are but they are still not where synthetics are. I'd put a top tier conventional oil against a low tier synthetic but there is no cost savings.

Crankcases are subjected to too much crap to justify extending change intervals because you put synthetic in it.
Wrong. Decades worth of research and SAE white papers contradict that statement. Both gas and diesel engines benefit from synthetic crankcase oils and extended OCI's. I change my oil every 7,500 miles in my daily driver and my other truck only needs annual oil changes. My F150 sat 3 years with Pennzoil Platinum in it and the cams and piston bores looked absolutely spotless when I finally got around to firing it back up again.

Synthetic oil in a crankcase is a waste. Conventional oil goes bad because of combustion blowby, not because it breaks down. Being synthetic doesn't protect the oil from blowby and it loads up just as quickly and needs to be changed at the same intervals.
This is completely untrue. I've personally seen the results of many oil analysis that say the exact opposite. You are very badly misinformed.

Sure it does. It's subjected to the same conditions such as blowby (to a lesser extent than diesel engines) and general crap loading from dust, condensation, etc.
I'm not saying it is zero. I'm saying it is not a factor in determining when to change the oil. Additives is the determining factor in engines that are in good running order. That is the reason synthetics can be used up to 25k miles. They are not cleaner at that point. They still have enough of the additives and still maintain lubricating properties up until that point.
Diesel engines are an entirely different animal hence the different ratings for diesel engine oil.

No. Mostly on Dodge and then GM sites.

Redbone, have you ever posted on TTORA.com?
Haven't been on in years, but it was designed to be a Tacoma forum. Went on many rides with the guys to Texas, north LA, Tenn, FL, etc. Founding member of the LA-TTORA chapter(along with one other guy)

DIY for $25-$35 or go to an oil change place and get changed for $50-$75.

A lot of mechanics will say that synthetic oil is just a waste of money
And sounds like you need a new mechanic...synthetic is proven to last longer and safer for your vehicle...
