Yes.

The other option is he really really wants an L-shape, would be to move the columns to the front of the counter, run parallel stringers between them, and then the joists can cantilever in both directions are are supported closer to middle in two points.

Although if you're going to move the columns to the front of the counter, might as well just add them to the ones at the back.
