This is my first year with a actual yard of my own. My parents never fertilized growing up and everything seemed to be fine.

Growing up, we always left the grass clippings in the yard instead of collecting them. That should be enough, right?

What is the opinion of the OT?

I just had my back yard leveled and sodded with Empire Zoysia. They suggest to bag the clippings. Each grass is different.

Driving down my street, you an definitely tell who fertilizes and who doesnt. If your fine with a "decent" yard then dont worry about putting fertilizer out

How much did that cost you?

It depends a lot on the grass type, soil conditions, amount of sun, and annual rain fall. One size does not fit all in this situation.

The answer in a lot of areas is no. Others you can get away without fertilizer, but your yard may not look the best.

I live in a semi-rural area where we all have 1+ acre lots. I'm not looking to win any awards at all.

$270/pallet installed. Plus the dirt and a crew to spread it. About $2,000.

I would say yes to feeding your grass.

It may depend on the type of grass you have.

eta: And of course the size of the yard.If it's not a turf grass(sod) you may not want it to grow faster and have to cut more often.

No it is not "necessary". If you have neighbors who fertilize and you do not, you will be able to tell a difference. I like the weed killing component to Weed & Feeds, I would at least suggest using a weed killer, killa.

Weed and Feed.

I've seen some great looking Common Bermuda lawns.

I think I've got what's called "Sport Bermuda".6 pallets around 8 years ago.

You're supposed to mulch the clippings. If you use the side discharge or just pour the bag out, you'll do nothing but prevent the sun from hitting the grass and end up browning it.

I like Weed and Feed too. But the local lawn guru on Houston talk radio, Randy Lemmon, says not to use it. He has a fertilizer schedule that he says will keep your lawn healthy enough to naturally fight off any weeds without having to use Weed and Feed.

LINK

I haven't tried it but people seem to say it works.

Live near me. We have a big dog that likes to shite in the neighbors yard. Their grass is always green.

How much did that set you back? Oh and what was the yard size? My GC did a hideous job of leveling the soil in my front and backyard and though I'm only on a 3rd of an acre, I think this is in my future...

About $2,000. I paid more for the 12 yds of dirt than I should have $400. It wasn't the high quality I envisioned. I paid for a crew to spread it out $325. They did a great job. The put it out in such a way that it looked like fluffed icing. The sod was $270/pallet. I needed 5 and or 2250 sq. ft.
