It's an interesting question. Cannibalism is illegal. Wikipedia defines cannibalism as follows:

Cannibalism is the act or practice of humans eating the flesh or internal organs of other human beings.

The human placenta is an endocrine organ by any definition.

The tricky part is that cannibalism is also widely defined as eating only the flesh of another human. Seems to be differing definitions.

According to wikipedia's definition, this guy is breaking the law.

I think animals eat their own placenta in the wild to get rid of any scent predators might be attracted to - give the newborn time to get its muscle coordination up to speed.

A husband eating his wife's placenta is just bizarre and seems almost borderline illegal by cannibalism laws.
