I live in Texas and was asked this during conversation as a rebuttal. Subject and tone.of the discussion will be intentionally omitted here.

Anyone willing to answer based upon your current geography, demographic or social landscape?

FTR, I gave them credit for a phenomenal question and ability to even come up with it.

Bigotry

quote:

intolerance toward those who hold different opinions from oneself.

Patriotism

quote:

love for or devotion to one's country

One is based on devotion and one is based on intolerance. Seems pretty cut and dry to me.

ETA: They're not mutually exclusive, but they're not synonyms either.

If you think it's cut and dry, fine w me.

Issue I had was the underlying mentality of the question. It wasn't easy to defend. Her point was the shift in the word patriot as it pertains to bigotry. That by "loving America" I could "fear based on race en masse" and actually get traction doing it.

No it's not, Truth prefers vague generalities.

I'm going to say yes. Unconditional loyalty to land and saying frick you to anyone who shows anything other than that is patriotism in America.

Redefining words isn't a good argument. This is in line with "black people can't be racist", as another poster pointed out, you can dismiss this argument by showing them the definitions of the words.

According to whom?

Things like this are intentionally impossible to defend when one party defines everything to fit their own opinion.

I wonder what this person would consider "not bigotry." I assume the list would begin and end with whichever ideals she has adopted.

I assume this was trump related

you're not a bigot for not wanting illegal immigrants in your country, there is a legal way to become an american, my parents did it, millions of other immigrants did too. They came to go to school, we have enough people here to do all the manual labor so we don't need an influx of illegals to take those jobs.

as for the women and gays thats a big LOL to me

So Hillary was a champion for women's rights and gays rights correct? That's why she opposed gay marriage in the 90s right? There is video of her saying as much I dont have 30 seconds to youtube and link it. Next up she took huge donations from islamic nations where get this women and gays have ZERO rights lol. Her best friends the Saudis oppress women to the end of time and gays, well they're executed LMAO.

Its hilarious to hear the hypocrisy from what we call the tolerant left and to top things off the other day we had a dress maker who made michelle obama's dresses refuse to make one for melania, now think back to the bakery in oregon I think it was that refused to make a cake for the gays getting married, what happened to them? What's happening to this dress maker? The bakery was marginalized and shite on by the media and this dress maker is a hero.

Liberals still don't understand the bulk of society doesn't care about their social issues and voted against big time. Hey I love Obama since his tenure began republicans have gained 11 senate seats, 14 governates, 60 house seats, and won over 400 counties that we lost in the last election. Now democrats are crying that our 200 year old electoral college system isnt fair bc their gigantic democratic utopias where their entire populations are concentrated dont get the fair treatment they deserve. LOL like 87% of this country by land mass was pro trump, the dems all are focused on a few large cities and overpopulation by the poor and uneducated.

If you agree with all that you aren't a bigot but rather a human being with a brain go tell your coworkers that

This is one of the new leftist talking points to go along with "alt right".

I saw it all weekend: Patriotism = Racism

I'd love to hear the context of this, but my guess is you let this person redefine a word in order to "make a point".

Take it from a former prog: It is what they do.

Patriotism and bigotry are two different words meant to define two completely different things.

These people are desperate, and I'm loving every second of it.

Don't let that narrative fly. There are some basic human truths on which we should all agree, and dissenters shouldn't be tolerated. Being intolerant of a certain race or religion that doesn't believe in those basic tenets =/= bigotry.

That being said, they're not mutually exclusive. You can certainly be both a patriot and a bigot, depending on your country.

Meh, I think that's a hard thing to judge. You could just as easily say "political correctness=antagonizing white people" or "capitalism=hating poor people" or "socialism=hating rich people".

All of these ideas have concrete definitions, if someone wants to extrapolate past those then they're free to do it. They're a stereotyping a-hole, but they're free to do it.

Perhaps in smaller and/or more homogenous countries where the vast majority of the population is say, Nordic or Mediterranean or Asian or some such.

But I think in the U.S., almost by definition, patriotism is to a country which is multi-faceted, as far as religion, ethnicity, race, etc.

Heck, the Germans and Slavs in their respective home lands looked at each other as pretty much sub human. But here they are mostly lumped together under the same heading - "white people".

Generally no. Patriotism is the faith and loyalty to one's country. Get enough enough bigots together to make a country (so that bigotry is an accepted and welcomed part of its national identity) then it can get kind of muddled (see: almost every country in the Middle East).

Also, if bigotry = patriotism, then wouldn't tolerance = treason?

Both "sides" are using their stereotypes as truth, though. It's a clash that's redefined both Patriot and Bigot. It's getting to the point where even moderates have to pick a side or face new bullshite labels.
