Is anyone else following the David Geithner/Gawker Scandal?

It's fascinating to see how fast their readers and long-term posters with a following are turning on them and how Gawker, which always criticizes celebrities and politicians for half-arse apologies and obfuscation has essentially done nothing but offer half-arse apologies and obfuscation, themselves.
And all of it is from a story that probably wouldn't have been a big pageview getter in the first place. I mean no one cares about David Geithner, essentially an upper class no-name 24 hours ago, who treated that gay porn star escort as uncreepily as you can, I guess.
I know this might not be of interest to a lot of people on the OT, but I figured I would post it since we are in the midst of the Gawker/Reddit wars, which admittedly are very one-sided, and this story is definitely related to that.
I genuinely wonder if this is going to be a bigger issue for them than Hulk Hogan.

Yes.
I don't read Gawker, but I do read their sub-sites including Deadspin, I09 and Kotaku.
I honestly couldn't believe they did that. I saw that article earlier in the day and passed over it and then I saw one of Kotaku's writers that I follow on Twitter tweet about it and checked it out. Honestly was appalled, but I mean I shouldn't expect too much out of a legit gossip site.
Kind of hope that company goes bankrupt.

Can you give some cliffs on what happened or what he did?
I haven't heard anything about it.

Just tell me who I should be triggered by and I'll play along

Yeah, I read it earlier. Here's a link to the archived article LINK. Really shitty of them to post something like that.

I passed over the article. But now I'm intrigued.
It is off putting when Gawker tends to call out people for the most ridiculous reasons. I've noticed it a lot more this year than in the past.

There are mini-celebrities on Gawker the way there are on TD. I've always assumed that some of them are actually pseudonyms of writers on the site or people who receive some income from Gawker Media, as Denton is a shady dude. However, no one has been on Gawker's side on this issue.
Shockingly, the writers and editors are so insulated that they all still think it's the right decision, outside of a few Deadspin, io9, Kotaku, and Gizmodo people.
THey are guilty of exactly the stuff they criticize in other media organizations.

Basically Gawker was informed by the male porn star about Geithner contacting him and wanting to pay for sex or whatever. Well Gawker just takes the screenshots of the texts between the two and posts them on their site. This guy Geithner has a family and like three kids. Everyone is pissed, including me, that they were more worried about page views then they were about outing a man and ruining his family. At least that's how I took it. What little credibility they had was shot with what they did.
They did take the story down today, but still doesn't change anything.

I really wonder what the responses what have been from their readers if he was trying to get a female porn star.

One of the posters on Gawker even says "This is the family you just ruined dude". With a photo of Geithner's family attached.
Really fricked up on Gawker's part.

They posted an article detailing who voted to nuke the article and who voted to keep it up so they're already in Phase 1 of Operation Scapegoat.
It will probably work out for the best because you'd have to be one dumb, obtuse motherfricker to not be able to read the tea leaves and still vote "Keep the article up".

Here is my summary:
Gawker is a popular left-of-center blog that posts aggregated news and also gives their writers a chance to express themselves without kissing arse. It's kind of like TMZ but if you read that site, or the sister sites like Deadpsin, Kotaku (video games), Gizmodo (electronics), you will start recognizing the readers.
Yesterday, they published a story about a man named David Geithner. He is married and the brother of Obama's former Treasury secretary. The story essentially says that Geithner hired a gay escort for when he traveled to Chicago. The escort learned that he was the brother of a big shot, he blackmailed him and said he would go public if he wasn't helped in a dispute with his apartment complex.
Gawker ran the story and didn't even disclose the identity of the escort. Geithner did not send dick pics, harass the escort, or do anything the least bit aggressive. He is not a public figure and is not a gay basher or anything else.
Gawker traditionally bashes the NY Times, Washington Post, etc. yet in this case, they have no clue why 90% of their readers are angry about this. Their top execs are being very arrogant and making life worse for themselves.
Additional info: Gawker is being sued for $100 million by Hulk Hogan for publishing a part of his sex tape. NO ONE thinks Hogan will win. But Florida law requires appellate defendants to hold all possible winnings in escrow.
Second, Gawker is in a fight with Reddit. Reddit is owned by Conde Nast, the media conglomerate. Geithner is employed by Conde Nast.

yeah, no blame should be assigned to the guy cheating on his wife with dudes.
To get to the point, Gawker had no business outing this guy for clickbait.

Yeah, Gawker really did a big service to his wife and family by letting them know the truth.

Gawker is trash. I love the heat that catch for stuff like this. They bash ESPN for anything and everything but don't own this or Hulk Hogan thing.
I hope Hogan crushes them
