is 55 thousand million a real number?

Context of the sentence was, "they are 55 thousand million in debt". Does any country or culture ANYWHERE use place values this way or pronounce numbers this way? The person claims certain economists and chemists say numbers this way. Is this why America is fricked?

Yes. It is basically.
55, 000,000,000
Or 55 billion. Real number.
55, 000,000,000
Or 55 billion. Real number.

Yes I've heard people verbalized this way. Mostly finance types. It's 55 trillion.

Guys, 55 thousand million is 55 billion. Double fail.

Shows you how bad it is to write numbers out like in the OP

It's still hard to think where the 55,000 goes in relation to the millions place.
It took me three times to get it.
The 000 in the 55,000 goes in the millions place and not the billions place.
55 then is billion.
My ONLY GUESS as to why the author used the numbering in this way is to make it more accessible to people's brains in considering large numbers.
Like, there's no way you know what a billion looks like. It is hard to fathom. you can fathom a million. And you can fathom 55,000...so 55,000x a million in debt should be fathomable?

It's the same as 55 thousand trillion pennies.

55 million million is 55 trillion.
When multiplying by 1000 you add a comma. It's 55 billion.
Then again I'm the guy who spends 12.43 at the store and asks for 17.57 in gas at the register and get s a confused clerk. Wait, 17.57?!? Then they look at me like I'm a retard until they ring it up and it's $30

EVERYBODY except the US and some other English speaking countries.
I would rather have one billion European pennies than one billion US dollars.
Ponder that, get back to me.....

There's no such thing as "real numbers", they are an abstract idea that humans created.

At 1 Euro = 1.7 US dollars exchange rate
1 billion pennies, or $10 million
= $17 million american
You're losing out on A LOT of money there.
Right?
