Apple released an update to iOS over the weekend and for those of you who normally wait a few days to see if problems crop up, it sounds like it fixes a pretty serious security flaw and you should update ASAP.
quote:

Apple Inc. has pushed an update for iOS mobile devices to close a gaping hole in its security software, which gave spies and hackers the ability of to grab e-mail, financial information and other sensitive data. An update for its Mac computers is reportedly coming “very soon.”

...The problem lies in the way the software recognizes the digital certificates used by banking sites, Google’s Gmail service, Facebook and others to establish encrypted connections. A single line in the program and an omitted bracket meant that those certificates were not authenticated at all, so that hackers can impersonate the website being sought and capture all the electronic traffic before passing it along to the real site.

In addition to intercepting data, hackers could insert malicious web links in real e-mails, winning full control of the target computer.

The intruders do need to have access to the victim’s network, either through a relationship with the telecom carrier or through a WiFi wireless setup common in public places. Industry veterans warned users to avoid unsecured WiFi until the software patch is available and installed.

The bug has been present for months, according to researchers who tested earlier versions of Apple’s software. No one had publicly reported it before, which means that any knowledge of it was tightly held and that there is a chance it hadn’t been used.

And now the normal Fanboy Flame Fest can commence.

apple is VERY slow in releasing security updates, especially when compared to M$ or java (sun). god knows how long this hack has been known about.

neither is adware, ransomware, spyware etc. but if you get one... you got a virus.

thats how generalities work. now move along.

How can this be? I thought apple was the end all be all of mobile devices! There is no way they would let a security issue such as this linger for so long.

Dam this update needs 1.2 gigs of storage? I only have 500mb free. Might be a dumb question, but will this update permanently use this 1.2g, or will it free up after it is applied?

It's only about 12-13MB. Shouldn't be anywhere near 1.2GB.

Oh I read it wrong. It says the update is 68mb, but it can't be installed because it requires at least 1.2g of storage. Doesn't really make sense why this would be, but I will just delete some crap. I'm definitely spending the extra hundo for extra storage on the 6!
