His mom definitely brainwashed him, and I feel bad that a mother is basically feeding anti-America propaganda to a kid way too young to know any better.
But I've always found the "Pledge of Allegiance" to be a very weird/authoritarian type of ritual. Pledging allegiance to your country every morning at school? That just seems weird AF. I always did it in grade school because I had no reason not to - but it seems like there's an element of propaganda/brainwashing to it.

the child stated, “he was doing it to protest the government of the United States, as it was racist, greedy and does not care about people.”
A 6-7 year old said this? What a joke.

Good for her. That is a clear violation of the kid's rights.

Disagree with the first half agree with the second.
I don't have a problem with this. The US is the only "free" country in the world that makes its citizens make a pledge of allegiance to a flag.

I thought this was going to be about a Jehovah's Witness.

Refusing to recite the pledge is weird. But it's none of my fricking business because we live in a free country.
Nobody really cares about the pledge, but students being able to refuse things like this at school is a little worrying.
What about refusing to participate in American History, because of its glorification of racism and oppression?
Hell, what about refusing to go to class entirely because of that red white and blue symbol of hate flying outside?

I know I know. All us Missouri folks are alt-right extremists.

Eh, kind of. The "kids" were high schoolers though. That's a far cry from a 1st grader.

Home schooling is legal. Everyone has the right to home school.

Jehovah's Witnesses refuse to pledge allegiance to the flag because they deem it to be a graven image and blasphemous against God. I don't normally agree with them, but on this issue I see their point.

"Just because someone doesn't want their child sitting in a classroom decorated with pictures of despots like Lincoln, slaveowners like Washington, or rapists like Jefferson, they should be forced to home school?
The US flag has overseen slavery, the genocide of Native Americans, and oppression of all minorities. Yet it is flown where our children are sent to learn. Children have a right to go to public school without being exposed to symbols of hate and white supremacism."
This is some people's mindset. Where is the line drawn?

Plenty of people make their FIRST GRADERS go to church and teach them to believe in a sky-man.
That's called instilling beliefs, not setting up a lawsuit to get paid.

School was in the wrong, don't see a good argument for having monetary damages though

History is an integral part of education. The American flag and the pledge of allegiance are not. If this kid never received the pledge he can still be just as educated as every other kid in his class

Some would argue differently. Wasn't there a thread last year or so where a school skipped the Civil War in history class to avoid hurting feelings?
I just think students protesting curriculum is a slippery slope.

That's your interpretation of what this mother was doing. But guess what, if the principal handles this situation appropriately, there's no lawsuit.
Instilling beliefs is instilling beliefs. People just don't agree with this mother's beliefs.

A first grader isn't making that type of decision for himself. What experience has he ever had for him to claim the government is racist, greedy and doesn't care about people?
Either way, its a sign of patriotism that should be taught. You don't have to agree with the government and you have the right to say what you want when you are old enough to understand, but I guess this will just be one more kid taught to be a victim.
