Indiana Mother Sues Principal, Teacher For Forcing Son to do Pledge of Allegiance

quote:
A Terre Haute, Ind., mother is suing an elementary school principal and teacher for forcing her son to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance.
In March, Jamie Porter’s first grade son at Fuqua Elementary School did not stand to salute the flag and his teacher, Kelly McFarland, sent the student to the principal’s office, according to Tribstar News.
When asked why he didn’t salute the flag, according to the lawsuit, the child stated, “he was doing it to protest the government of the United States, as it was racist, greedy and does not care about people.”
quote:
And that’s when the principal, Mary Beth Harris, should have said, “You’re right, go back to class.” But of course that didn’t happen. Later that day, the student was removed from lunch by Harris, and was forced to practice the Pledge.
quote:
“He was later required by Harris to recite the Pledge with her. This is a flagrant denial of A.B.’s rights under the First Amendment and he requests his damages, both compensatory and punitive,” the lawsuit says.
quote:
The lawsuit states that the little boy sat quietly in his seat and did not cause a disruption when he refused to stand for the Pledge and the child, who recently was in therapy for the death of his father, “remains extremely upset about going to school. He has always felt that he was an outsider and this, compounded by his father’s death, makes these feelings even worse. He is suffering continuing anxiety and harm because of this incident.”

This is a setup for a money grab if I've ever seen one.

I'd love to see a picture of this single Mom.
Should've called CPS to lock the Mom up for treating her son like this. What kind of disgusting person puts their first grader up to that.

Oh you are definitely an outsider now. And you'll be fricked with for the rest of your school years. Mainly because your Mother has brainwashed you to be a pussy.

who recently was in therapy for the death of his father,
Why does this matter at all? Was his grieving the reason he couldn't stand and say the pledge?

Maybe he should be home schooled in the country of his mother's choice. The words he said were hers, not his. It is her that hates this country so she should be able to take her spawn with her when she leaves.

I'd agree with most of that but I don't see how not saying the pledge is gonna make it better.

I would love to see theses delusional fricks have to move to a country that really doesn't care about them and is really racist. These dumbasses don't have a clue how good they have it here.

It's times like these that everyone involved should make the mother feel like shite. She obviously made her FIRST GRADER do this.

Plenty of people make their FIRST GRADERS go to church and teach them to believe in a sky-man.

I agree. They are certainly FREE to leave if they think it's so bad here.

Obviously this story will get the resident Toby Keiths on this site all riled up, but at the end of the day, free speech is one of our country's greatest assets. Americans enjoy more liberty in this respect than citizens of almost every other developed country - particularly in Europe. It's absurd to think you can force an American citizen to pledge allegiance to anything, much less a flag.
This is the greatest country in the history of human civilization because of the civil liberties enshrined in our Constitution, our independent judiciary, and the peaceful transition of executive power. Not because of a flag, or the national anthem, or the English language, or the Ten Commandments, or Jesus. It's difficult to reconcile the American Revolution with the "my country, right or wrong" attitude that seems so prevalent among some people these days.
Refusing to recite the pledge is weird. But it's none of my fricking business because we live in a free country.

Basically what happened in Tinker v. Des Moines. Parents using their kids

why do we never do the pledge after grade school. never understood that one. it's like instilled in your brain as a young kid and then it's like, we are older and don't have to do it
