The inaugural U.S. flight of one of Airbus’s newest aircraft models was supposed to be a big deal, showcasing the impressive new jumbo jet on its very first trip from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport. Instead, it was spectacularly terrifying and embarrassing fail. The high tech jet’s computer system aborted it’s own takeoff — because it deemed the runway too short.

The passengers get to watch the takeoff on the television screens behind their seats.

So a safety mechanism went into affect and that's a fail? Fail would have been they all crash and die.

To be fair, that is a little inaccurate. The safety mechanism activated when it shouldn't have, which is kind of the opposite of "safe."

Coincidentally I've been watching Air Crash Investigations today. I just watched one on Turkish Airlines 1951 that crashed into the ground because the airplane thought it was on the ground and put the engines at idle while it was still flying.

Sounds like a huge success to me. A computer AI in an airplane averted a disaster?

Those are some interesting seating cubicles. I'm guessing not the coach section.

Someone mentions in the comments the autobrakes were likely applied because the pilots likely made a bad weight calculation. In other words the plane was overweight for take off.

Pilots must have used the weight formulas for European, not American, passengers.

Just do an aircraft carrier take off. Gun the engines in after burner, build up the boost and launch that mofo!!

And yes I realize those engines don't have afterburner.....

Sorta. Better to have a false warning than fail to catch a real emergency, although obviously it's better that everything work just great.

Have to love the stewardess demanding that people turn their cameras off.
