Handmaid's Tale

quote:

The Handmaid's Tale is a futuristic dystopian novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood published in 1985. It is set in a near-future New England in a patriarchal, totalitarian theonomic state known as the Republic of Gilead, which has overthrown the United States government. Offred is the central character and narrator and one of the "Handmaids": women who are forcibly assigned to produce children for the "Commanders", who are the ruling class in Gilead.

The novel explores themes of powerless women in a patriarchal society, loss of female agency and individuality, suppression of women's reproductive rights, and the various means by which women resist and try to gain individuality and independence.

1984

quote:

Nineteen Eighty-Four (also published as 1984) is a dystopian novel and cautionary tale by English writer George Orwell. It was published on 8 June 1949 by Secker & Warburg as Orwell's ninth and final book completed in his lifetime. Thematically, it centres on the consequences of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and repressive regimentation of people and behaviours within society. Orwell, a democratic socialist, modelled the authoritarian state in the novel on the Soviet Union in the era of Stalinism, and Nazi Germany. More broadly, the novel examines the role of truth and facts within societies and the ways in which they can be manipulated.

The story takes place in an imagined future in an unspecified year believed to be 1984, when much of the world is in perpetual war. Great Britain, now known as Airstrip One, has become a province of the totalitarian superstate Oceania, which is led by Big Brother, a dictatorial leader supported by an intense cult of personality manufactured by the Party's Thought Police. The Party engages in omnipresent government surveillance and, through the Ministry of Truth, historical negationism and constant propaganda to persecute individuality and independent thinking.

We are somewhere between "A Brave New World" and "1984"

Closer to 1984, but it is a combo of 1984 and A Brave New World.

1984 leaves out the “distractions” and “pleasure” that society partakes in in A Brave New World.

Those “distractions” are apparent in the modern world, while a 1984 surveillance state is not, at least not applicable to the USA yet. It is more applicable to the UK.

A Brave New World is one of my favorite books, and outclasses 1984, IMO.

A Handmaid’s Tale is simply feminist torture-pr0n. It isn’t even applicable to Middle Eastern countries.

I mean we are already actually living in 1984, we just don’t know it yet.

Handmaid’s Tale is silly. The leftists will dress up in those outfits and pretend men are forcing them to procreate for them because states now get to decide on abortion.

But I get blasted on reddit for suggesting the government mass surveillance is a worrying issue for all of us.

Way closer to 1984.

Literally just mommy porn that women pretend to be disgusted at but mentally enjoy reading because they imagine themselves with many strong men. Women in today's society hardly have kids let alone being forced to do it.

Why BNW is much more applicable than 1984

Exactly.

I equate it to the 50 Shades of Gray phase women went through.

Brave New World+1984+ a Dash of Demolition Man.

There's a good chance we aim squarely at Demolition Man with more totalitarianism

We are laughably far from handmaid's tale. The HT protest against Trump was hysterical.

This board and how world's going to shite

To preface, US has 4% global population:

60 of worlds top 100 universities are in the US

4 of worlds top 5 hospital chains are in the US

US stock exchanges (Nasdaq and NYSE) own 55% of entire global public market cap

9 of richest 10 people in the world are Americans

US has over 4x as many Nobel Luareates as the next closest country

US has more gold medals at the olympics than any other country has in total medals (gold, silver, and bronze combined)

US spends as much as or close to on military than the entire rest of world combined

Violent crime, murder, and total crime has dropped 50% in the US since 1980-1995 to today

People want to move here so bad, that we only accept 3% of green card applications

I get everyone on here is over 50 and "rawr back in muh day, everything was better" but at least be objective about it.
