That's the one that gets me. Coming from abject poverty with illiteracy in her family made a huge impact on her. So, she started the initiative as a promise to the people in her home county that she would give a book a month to every child from birth until 5 years old so that they'd have something to read. It blew up and expanded to the entire state of Tennessee. Then, it got so big that she started partnering with local "chapters" for lack of a better word to get local funding to spread the initiative.
It has now grown to be a global initiative and has given over 70 million books away to kids so they'd have something to read and build literacy.
Not too shabby for a little girl with a coat made of rags.
