Does this phenomenon just happen automatically?

I'm a small frame guy. Pretty much a paper pusher at work, so not much physical activity inside and out of work. Just started to do a little lifting. I do have a lifted truck.

You need to challenge someone to a fight to find out.

It doesn't kick in until you put your truck nuts on your lifted truck. Everyone knows that, baw.

That is reserved for people that actually use their hands for something other than pushing pencils. A mechanic will hurt you with a handshake if they want.

I'm convinced that you have to have a son that makes you rage for old man strength

This. Just make sure they are younger than you so your old man strength outweighs theirs.

Old man strength is a mentality. It comes from reaching an age when you no longer give a crap. It’s called projecting power to avoid conflict.

A buddy of mine has an auto shop, doing most of the work himself. Always been a stout, solid guy, all the way back to our teens, but his shoulders now wouldn't look out of place on an offensive lineman. Guy is a tank at about 50.

I know retired Marine Corps helicopter pilot who's nearly eighty. He's rail thin but his handshake is like a vise. I'm convinced it's from those years of fighting the cyclic.

This is old man strength. I’ve really only heard this phrase as a teenager by other chest puffed out chumps that thought they could whip their dad’s arse and subsequently fricked around and found out.

I’ve always taken the term to mean “dad strength”.

I took a swing at my old man one Christmas…I never dreamed that it would be his last.

Old man strength happened to me at around 25-28... Had a bruised rib injury from a wreck. Thought it might be a broken rib, but the doc prescribed me Oxycontin. Threw that crap in the trash and reported him to the AMA. Pretty sure nothing happened cause Docs have no liability to be legalized Drug Lords.
