A master painting is no different than the 1st Ferrari or Corvette to come off an assembly line. The value is in the importance and rarity.

You can't drive a fricking painting to the store to buy a pack of cold beer.

I would much rather own the corvette.. or the pack of cold beer.

1,3,2,4

And if I had the money, I'd buy either 1 or 3.

I always hear myself saying, "Instead of this job I should have been a" but that sentence has never ended with shitey painter...until today.

Take this job and shove it. I'm getting some fingerpaint going, after lunch break of course.

It's all because they were the first to popularize a certain artistic revolution/design. Pretty simple. There can only be one first who spawns many imitators. In each of these cases the artist was either the first to debut a certain artistic design never seen before or they were the first artist to make a design popular or critically important.

Although all true, it's still a load of bullshite.

Same with some boats. My friend just dropped $200k on a yellowfin. Same as buying one of these paintings, but cheaper.

Taste is relative. The appeal of abstract art is limited to very few people. I'm not sold on the fact that their taste in art is any greater than the average guy.

Either you understand modern art or you don't. And it can be difficult because you have to educate yourself rather than make snap judgement based on "Me think it pretty" line of reasoning.

I think he'd just rather spend that kind of money on, I dunno, things like:

- A house
- A child's education
- Donate to charity
- Invest
- Save for retirement/emergency

I agree.

It also involves lottery type luck. Most of the artists who are successful in their lifetime are extremely lucky. They may have real talent...they may not...but if an artist is extremely successful in his or her lifetime it's because they were at the right place at the right time. Or, rather, they had the right idea at the right time and the right people just happened to notice and promote their art.

Pollock could have easily been a failure. Those incredible paintings that are now priceless could've ended up in a dusty attic where no one noticed...and the art world would've passed him by without hesitation. Someone else would've eventually created a similar style, profited from the critical acclaim, and Pollock's work would've simply been viewed as "imitation".

It's all about who reaches the finish line first...not who starts the race first.
