Taste is relative. The appeal of abstract art is limited to very few people. I'm not sold on the fact that their taste in art is any greater than the average guy.

Either you understand modern art or you don't. And it can be difficult because you have to educate yourself rather than make snap judgement based on "Me think it pretty" line of reasoning.

- Invest

I agree.
It also involves lottery type luck. Most of the artists who are successful in their lifetime are extremely lucky. They may have real talent...they may not...but if an artist is extremely successful in his or her lifetime it's because they were at the right place at the right time. Or, rather, they had the right idea at the right time and the right people just happened to notice and promote their art.
Pollock could have easily been a failure. Those incredible paintings that are now priceless could've ended up in a dusty attic where no one noticed...and the art world would've passed him by without hesitation. Someone else would've eventually created a similar style, profited from the critical acclaim, and Pollock's work would've simply been viewed as "imitation".
It's all about who reaches the finish line first...not who starts the race first.
