Guys who used to love billing out triple time to companies and state agencies who couldn't write a contract worth a damn.

A 10-15 year shortcut? Even if thats really true, do you really feel you have the skills to make that big jump? I'm not doubting you, I'm asking you to carefully consider. If you jump in over your head, this promotion that you got because others went out on a limb is not going to be there anymore.

If I were you, I'd apply and interview. You might get a better feel for what you need to do after that.

I, for one, would love for someone so indecisive that they must come to an internet message board to get career advice to be the third in line for running one of the largest entities in the state. What could go wrong?

ETA: Im in a similar situation, but I've only ben with this company since Feb and still training. My new position would star the end of this month.

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

You have to take the big opportunity. Anyone who doesn't understand isn't worth keeping as a friend.

Well said.

Do what is best for you. Companies everywhere go through the layoff periods... They will not think twice about what is best for you. They are out for #1 and you should be too.
