I've been contemplating learning piano for the past couple months. I have one sitting in my house already as added encouragement. I also should still be able to read music from my middle school band days. Any tips for starting out?

There's a guy on YouTube (Shawn cheek I believe) who teaches you how to play a bunch of hit songs without having to read sheet music.

Go to a music store, pick out some fairly easy sheet music and go from there. Another great teaching item is a hymnal. It's great for sight reading practice.

Do it! Each day that goes by is a day of progress that you miss if all you do is think about it!
Most of my teaching was with elementary school children and I loved to see them progress. Especially loved their excitement as they did what they thought hey couldn't do.
Would love to teach adults from scratch. They need a special type of encouragement to overcome their worst critic, their own self.
If anyone ever gives you flack about wanting to learn to play any instrument, ignore them. I had a lot of professional colleagues look down and roll their eyes at me, but I bet they never played Chopin's Aeolian Harp (I think that's the correct name, it took for ever to learn; not sure my hands work that way anymore).

We put our oldest son in lessons about a year ago and it is amazing how fast he has picked it up. I had no idea how much pianos cost until he started lessons and we bought a new one for our home

Mud, how's the piano playing coming along? Watched a documentary this week about Olga Samaroff. Made me want to play piano again. One of my keys sticks. Having a tuner/repair man come out this Monday. It's been almost 12 years since I played (maybe 5 hours in the past 11 years, 7 months). Going to try and find some of the music I played years ago and rework them, then on to something new.
I know it's hard, but don't ever give up!!! Keep us posted.
