Is it just me or does it seem we as country go out of our fricking way to appease black people?

When I say we I don't mean me personally, but the media, the govt, political leaders and others of influence?

Blacks have replaced pussy as the forefront on the pedestal.

Idk which is better to be white or black, but the fact remains black people have every opp to succeed in America soley based on the color of their skin.

Life is tough, cry me a fricking River. If everyone quit when the odds were stacked against them we would still be trying to build fires in caves.

Sometimes we start off on shittier playing fields. Went to a public school with 50/50 makeup. Single mother, shite non existent dad, low income. I turned out fine. My mom worked her arse off. I worked my arse off. We got by and I got ahead.

I mean this with all sincerity - congratulations. Beating the odds like that should always be commended.

quote:

Sure as hell wasn't the color of my skin that did that. And for people to claim the color of my skin had anything to do with it and not the work ethic and effort put forth by my mother just pisses me off and minimizes what the woman that raised me went through and did. So yeah maybe I take this white privilege shite a little personnel and will always think its a fricking joke.

It isn't about minimizing what you and your mother accomplished. It is/was hard as hell for you and your mother to pull it off. It is not so much about you having an advantage because of your skin color as much as it is that being non-white puts you at a slight disadvantage. 64% of this country is white. The vast majority of business owners are white. The vast majority of hiring managers are white. Managers and owners subconsciously like to surround themselves with people who are like just like them - from their personality, work ethic, and even their outward appearance. It is human nature, and nothing to be ashamed of, but it is the truth.

You and your mom didn't have a conscious advantage rooted in racism like some want to paint it, but you and your mom went into most opportunities looking like the people who were making the decisions, and to deny that a black mother and son would be at a slight disadvantage is simply untrue.

You've obviously got no desire to educate yourself on the issue. I'm not suggesting there is anything we can do about it except continue to give people of all races the same opportunities to succeed. Time will be the great equalizer. The parents of the average 25-30 year old today were born into a time when segregation was still legal. To act like the effects of that are completely eradicated in the span of two generations is naive at best and ignorant at worst.

Like me working every summer full time out in the sun. Working after school when I wasn't involved with sports. My mom getting laid off at Thanksgiving and taking a job at a dollar store stocking shelves to put food on the table without ever being on welfare? Me working 40 hrs a week while having a full class schedule in college. Being field labor and having to travel right after I graduated college to get my foot in the door. Please tell me more about my advantage and non-white disadvantage. It had nothing to do with skin color and everything to do with doing what was necessary.

That's bullshite. I bet there's very few people from any race that wishes they were a different one. Of course I don't want to be black because all of my life experience/family culture revolves around white "norms". Being white is all I know. Why would I wish for something different than what is tied to my identity.

What a dumb question.

Again, you're missing the point. IF a black mother and son found themselves in the exact same predicament, for the two of them to succeed to the levels that you've attained, they would have had to overcome all of the things you and your mother did AND overcome the fact that they aren't white. Does that diminish anything you've done? No, of course not. Saying a black man would have to work a little bit harder than you did, or overcome one more disadvantage than you did, isn't a knock on you.

Let me give you an example. There has been talk lately about the lack of black coaches at the NFL level. Considering a large chunk of coaches are ex-players, and the fact that blacks make up a significant majority of the NFL, they're pretty severely underrepresented at the head coaching level, but the reasons for that have nothing to do with racism. All 31 owners and the Green Bay president are white. It is perfectly reasonable to expect them to associate with mostly white friends - we all do that with our respective race and class. Hiring and firing coaches in the NFL is largely subjective, and as a result, it is subject to natural biases like hiring the white coach out of two otherwise equally-qualified candidates. If qualification for the position cannot be quantified, which is seldom the case, then bias and human nature will creep into the picture.

The same is true for you and your mother. You don't owe anyone an apology, but trying to get jobs and opportunities in a mostly white work force is slightly more difficult if you're non-white. A non-white candidate has to create clear separation between himself and the field because if it comes down to "intangibles", they're unlikely to get the nod. I honestly don't understand why so many people have trouble grasping that concept.

Rephrase it then. Do you think being black in this country is better than being white?

People are just so ignorant on the issue. You've got an OP discussing some of the most vile and racist people in the country - BLM protesters - but most of the comments swing to the other extreme. Is it really unreasonable to expect someone to denounce the racism and BLM without suggesting it is better to be black in this country than white.

The extremity of these arguments is infuriating.

We think that blacks are usually better players in football and basketball and everyone is ok without some quota needing to be met. But thinking that whites are better at coaching is taboo. Why? Because there just need to be x number of black coaches? Does there also need to be x number of white players? Sorry but this is a made up injustice that people are just looking to bitch about.
