I'm confused by a protester

So i passed a black guy on the side of the highway. He was holding one fist aloft. Cradled in his arm was the bible. In the other hand was an American flag on a pole.
I'm curious as to what he was trying to say.
I honked at him. Seemed the right thing to do.
