You know the real problem, other than we can't afford it and they don't deserve it? It's that if you try to balance the budget and say, "I'm sorry, but the ability to stream the Avengers isn't a human right" those vote buying enablers will scream racism and classism and all the other invented insults.

Agree agree agree.

quote:

If you didn't work, your family didn't eat. So you either worked, in whatever you could find, or you starved. And didn't have 9 children from different men. Because if the daddy wasn't gonna pay for them then the rest of us weren't forced to foot the bill.

These people aren't "poor". I've seen poor people. Worked with poor people. People that grew up in one room shacks with no electricity. People that knew what it was like to starve. What it was like to live out of a car. And it made them appreciate what they had after they EARNED IT.

Disagree, and this is why they scream racism and classism.

Some people aren't poor because they've made awful decisions. Some have been dealt a really shitty hand. Some awful people with bad attitudes have been dealt a shitty hand.

I think it would be more constructive to start seriously discussing what we as a nation can do to help the poor and unfortunate. We need to have that discussion without baseless insults.

I completely agree. It sucks for them. Life is hard. You struggle through it to survive. It's not a character flaw to be poor. Millions of immigrants came to this country with nothing and they were POOR. Didn't have a nickel worth of dimes. And they struggled, and scrimped and saved and worked and survived. Because where they came from they were starving. Being killed.

That's not an excuse. And anyone who thinks that hard working people, of every race, color and creed, should have to pay for their goddamn BROADBAND BLASTED INTERNET can go get sodomized with a cactus.

I have no doubt. You've proven that everyone has the ability to gain access to the internet without having to roll out this program.

What's gonna be the next thing required by them? Laptops? Can't give them broadband without giving them computers.

The ability for the masses to vote themselves benefits is clearly represented by obamaphones, obamanet and obamacare.

quote:

"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But,
under the name of 'liberalism,' they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program,
until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."

- Norman Thomas (US Socialist Presidential Candidate)

quote:

“We don't have a trillion-dollar debt because we haven't taxed enough;
we have a trillion-dollar debt because we spend too much”

- Ronald Reagan

quote:

“A democracy is always temporary in nature;
it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government.
A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover
that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury.
From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates
who promise the most benefits from the public treasury,

with the result that every democracy will finally collapse
due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship”

Broadband don't play itself so I assume the Osiah will change the Obamaphones to Smartphones and free computers for everyone.

It's funny that people still think the president makes these kind of decisions. They are merely the face of their particular party.

If you chose to live far away from the city why should the rest of us pay for you to get broadband? As for the poor, they have bigger needs/problems and should have to work for the services they already get.

Doesn't the local library offer free internet?

The people of the United States of America asked Barack to come back for 4 more years, so we shouldn't be surprised by this.

I would love to comment more, but I have to get ready for work today.

Rather than look at all the worst case scenarios, how about thinking about the good that can come from it.

The Internet is like a phone line was in the 80s-- a necessity. Folks need email addresses to get in contact with employers, some schools require kids to do online homework, bills can be paid online if you can't afford to drive or don't have a car.

People can take online courses at home to improve their situation, learn how to better their health, participate in telemedicine, learn healthy eating habits. Perhaps they could treat their kids to Netflix movies as opposed to paying for cable.

They can educate themselves and stay civicly involved and know about what is going on in the community. There is so much good that can come from this if people use it right.

With everything, some people won't, but I think the potential for good, as opposed to the alternative, is great
