Are there really people out there that are unable to get internet if they want it? Almost all of the studies/articles I have read claim that the 13% of households lacking a computer are almost all old people living in the rural countryside.

You know the real problem, other than we can't afford it and they don't deserve it? It's that if you try to balance the budget and say, "I'm sorry, but the ability to stream the Avengers isn't a human right" those vote buying enablers will scream racism and classism and all the other invented insults.
What happened before all this ridiculous level of "safety nets" we have today was around.
If you didn't work, your family didn't eat. So you either worked, in whatever you could find, or you starved. And didn't have 9 children from different men. Because if the daddy wasn't gonna pay for them then the rest of us weren't forced to foot the bill.
These people aren't "poor". I've seen poor people. Worked with poor people. People that grew up in one room shacks with no electricity. People that knew what it was like to starve. What it was like to live out of a car. And it made them appreciate what they had after they EARNED IT.

My brother lives two miles outside the city limits and he pays out the arse for a hotspot with 5 GB of mobile data a month. His other choice is satellite internet which is even more expensive. Neither ATT nor the local cable operator has any interest in running a line out to the eight or ten houses on his road.
