We need to capitalize on the attraction that is LSU Football. We need to move the bars and restaurants closer and away from the ghetto to encourage people to stay on campus and spend more money. If that happened, people wouldn't all flood out of campus immediately after the game, and it would reduce the traffic as well

True. I wish so badly that someone could buy out all those north gate neighborhoods and turn them into something good.
North gate has some good little places, but that area changes after 6pm.
Brother's daughter goes to LSU and wanted to work at deli in North gate, I told her to go visit it at night before making her decision.
Banks in that area are robbed a lot.

Baton Rouge struggles to attract businesses because it is woefully behind most major metros in transportation infrastructure, crime, and quality of public schools.

The mayor of Baton Rouge has precious little power over these things.

Things that could be done:
Improvement of city/parish roads to improve street grid connectivity
Easement of alcohol regulations and taxes on performing artists to foster growth of microbreweries and music venues.
Decriminalization of marijuana
Refocusing of BRPD and EBRSO to combatig property crime and murder rather than traffic enforcement
Streetcar between LSU, downtown, and the airport
Lobby for loop project as well as passenger rail between BR and NOLA
Direct flight from BTR to LAX
Modify zoning regulations and building codes to make improvement of rundown and vacant structures easier as well as opening up new businesses in blighted neighborhoods
Pass ordinance demanding better sanitation and maintenance requirements at Blue Bayou. Incentivize creation of a legit rollar coaster
Push for BREC bike plan to connect major BREC properties with bike trails and lanes
Continue push for downtown development

Should have clarified that I wasn't trying to solve every problem, just change up a big money earner for BR

Edit: here is my bigger plan:

No more public zoo. If private investors find a zoo to be a good investment, let them make a great zoo. I doubt it though

Baton Rouge interstate bypass. Keep the 18 wheelers out of our city to reduce traffic

Synchronize the damn traffic lights

Make Florida Blvd a toll road, and charge to cross it as well as drive along it. That will essentially split the city between good BR and north BR and keep the trash out

Limit the amount of apartment communities allowed in BR south of I-10. This will reduce the ability for low income people to move to south BR

Move police patrols to more heavily around north BR and do daily inspection sticker checks there. Make it so those people can't drive without insurance. Drivers without insurance are usually trash and always a danger to the rest of us

Line up bulldozers on Government street facing north from I 110 to Sherwood. Send them north until they get to the Parish line

BR's and many older American city's challenge is infrastructure is so much more costly to rebuild compared to new construction.
esp. when you consider disruption to existing traffic flows, access to business.

You almost have to let it go completely under and start anew similar to some efforts in Detroit

plus LA public education is 3rd world level

I'm not sure the infrastructure is that terrible. I know only half of our city is decent, but if we were able to isolate our city into two halves, we could build up the good half more and possibly be prosperous. Chicago is similar to us in a lot of ways. Part of Chicago is absolutely ghetto war zone, but a large portion of it is great, tourism is abundant, and some top level businesses are there. There's a huge price difference in the good and bad part of the city that really separates it and isolates the good and the bad. The shootings aren't happening downtown

We have to accept that we can't get rid of some of the blight, but we can isolate it as much as possible by out-pricing them in the good areas. If we enforce inspection sticker, drivers license, etc in north BR, we can keep those people from driving. If we keep them from driving, we limit them from coming into our parts of the city, and then we can prosper in spite of them

For Baton Rouge to find its on identity, I mean the essence of Baton Rouge, we need to move LSU to New Orleans.

This will give the ole BR some space to walk on its on and find itself. Now thats going to mean playing athletic events in New Orleans which seems crazy but its not that bad a drive.

Several of the cities on that list are considered ahead of the curve when it comes to technology. We'd have a long way to go in that category alone, not to mention traffic/road infrastructure.

A decent mayor can't do shite with this joke of a city council.

Then as mayor, my first act would be to publicly challenge the entire city council to a melee brawl.

After their heads are mounted on spikes above the parapets of the OLD state Capitol, we'll see how accommodating the new city council is.

Then what about:
Atlanta, DC, Charlotte, Nashville

Is it the race or the city, economics etc?

How about Cincinnati? Or New Hampshire and its drug problem?

Eta: I dont know the answer. Just wondering.
