It really is. I think it was a docu where I saw a trash trail that was floating in the ocean that was miles and miles wide. It’s just common sense that this stuff does not belong there and therefore hurting and killing everything in it’s path.

As much of a tree hugger I am, unless I can visibly see them wash my glass, I’m using a straw.

If the glass is dirty isn’t drinking what’s in the glass as bad as touching the glass itself?
What about shot glasses, martini glasses, wine glass, champagne glass? Straw with them as well.
Nothing screams class like watching someone drink their wine through a straw. Not saying it doesn’t happen, it just appears as a tad trashy.

Recently the NHS students at the school I work at did a beach clean up. They filled almost 6 full size garbage bags of just straws.
Part of the problem as mentioned is that their weight allows them to blow away, drain through drain grates, and wind up outside of the trash. The US was using almost 500 million straws per day. Removing the straw isn’t a bad measure by any means. I’ll agree the use of other plastics should be culled as well, but this is a good start. I know Block Island has moved from the straw to banning plastic shopping bags and balloons. The city I live in will be doing the same within the year.

I suppose it’s plausible but that’s not really my soapbox.

Is it really that big of a deal to simply ask for a straw? At the end of the day, the restaurant decreases their waste output while saving a little money and the people who want straws get straws. Sounds like a win-win.

I don’t see what the big deal is. You want a straw...ask for one. I’ve been to restaurants that have been doing this (straws on request) for years now.

I got bigger fish to fry in my life than to get upset over petty shite. I’m not a liberal by any means...but some of the mouth breathers on here and the way they act towards anything remotely leaning to the liberal side is just ridiculous.

Most straws are unwrapped. They come in cardboard boxes that rats piss on as they chew on the cardboard. Even after being urine soaked the straw gets passed all around the restaurant and touched by more dirty hands than a porta potty door. Straws are a pain to take out and transfer into a new container. Almost every time this process is attempted the straws fall on the floor where they are gathered and then put back into a new straw container. If anything the straw, the menu, and the check presenter are the 3 dirtiest things in a restaurant.

That’s crazy and awesome that kids (assuming voluntarily) did that.

Welp, there goes my dinner plans tonight.

And, like I said, being a one time waitress has made me look at restaurants in a whole new light.

500 million straws

Waste of resources.

The gyre in pacific is full of plastic.

Some of you baws need to find something else to be stupid about besides using 500 straws a year.

Not sure why that matters? I think in the docu I saw many places in Europe are no longer using straws.
