If you listen to an audiobook, should you be able to say you read the book?

Technically, no.

Tell her she listened to a book.

I think it is easier than having to explain that you listened to it.

How about consumed? Would that cover all bases (read, listen, braile)

She had the book read to her, like you read bedtime stories to a kid: "Some nice man on a CD read me a nice story called Green Eggs and Ham."

What if she does a combination of read/listen?

Now that I found Audible that's what I do. Read the book on my kindle....listen to it when I'm driving or working out. For many Audible books....it will automatically sync up with where you are at in the kindle version.

I commute over an hour each way for work and listen to audiobooks exclusively. I say that I read them.

It only counts if you listen to the full unabridged edition.

You can say you've read the book once removed.

Listened?

I feel weird saying I read it, so I normally say "I was listening to the audiobook version of _____..."

It doesn't bother me if people say they read it, though. It's definitely easier than having to clarify.

I bet she is equally annoyed at how little shite bothers you when it doesn't effect you. But here you are.

I wish my life was so wonderful that these are the things that worried me and occupied my mind.

So, why does it annoy you? Do you feel like it cheapens your accomplishments? Are you trying to have her kicked out of the work book club?

Why not? I claim to have read books that I just scanned over on wikipedia.

If asked about whether one has read it, I would say it's totally acceptable because the person wants to talk about the content of the book and glossing over the fact you listened to it just expedites the discussion.

Not cool to tell people you read a book that you actually listened to unprompted.
