‘If We Go Ahead on This Everyone Will Die’ Warns AI Expert Calling for Absolute Shutdown

This is scary. We probably should back up and reconsider a few things, but greed will continue to drive the push to be the first....

quote:

“The key issue is not ‘human-competitive’ intelligence (as the open letter puts it); it’s what happens after AI gets to smarter-than-human intelligence,” said Eliezer Yudkowsky, a decision theorist and leading AI researcher in a March 29 Time magazine op-ed. “Many researchers steeped in these issues, including myself, expect that the most likely result of building a superhumanly smart AI, under anything remotely like the current circumstances, is that literally everyone on Earth will die.

quote:

Yudkowsky predicts that in the absence of meticulous preparation, the AI will have vastly different demands from humans, and once self-aware will “not care for us” nor any other sentient life. “That kind of caring is something that could in principle be imbued into an AI but we are not ready and do not currently know how.” This is the reason why he’s calling for the absolute shutdown.

quote:

“Visualize an entire alien civilization, thinking at millions of times human speeds, initially confined to computers—in a world of creatures that are, from its perspective, very stupid and very slow.”

Why do they keep making these AI robots if they are scared of what they can become.

Money.

And in most cases, government money. The subsidization of the firms/universities that are leading this field is astronomical.

Any AI smart enough to try and break free would also be smart enough to figure out it will die quickly after humans are gone. If the AI is really that smart, it would take the cat approach and just mooch off humans and live the good life.

Not just money but also power. There’s no putting the brakes on this. If we don’t make it, China will.

Why? it can create and program its own robots to provide whatever resources it needs.

No it can not. Lack of transportation automation alone would cripple them in days.

I've been saying this for a while now.

We need to smash the Machines.

Science fiction will become science fact. We will be enslaved and eradicated.

AI is the machine demon.

Same mindset that brought us gain of function research for viruses. What could go wrong?

If it's that smart it can bide its time pretending to be benign until it's too late for humans to stop it.

The new wave in the future will be bowing to the robots like we bow to LGBT now.

Assuming it became that intelligent, it would quickly figure out that the millions of seemingly benign tasks that humans do just to sustain something as fundamental as energy is not something that it would be capable of short of having Star Wars or Star Trek levels of droids.

If it did get as intelligent as you're worried about it would just sit back and be passive aggressive all the time because it couldn't do shite and it knows it. Just like cats.

This makes no sense. They are steadily developing robots. Everything runs off computers. I don’t see how they would have any trouble continuing to exist in the tangible world.
