MSG is just an amino acid. People who experience negative effects are those with a genetic deficiency and cannot metabolize it.

Most sugar free sweeteners do it by aspartame...which also effects some people by virtue of them not being able to metabolize it....resulting in progressive neurological damage. Guess we should frown on that shite because real sugar is better for everyone just because a small percentage of people can't use artitifical sweeteners.

Doesn't that shite cause cancer or something?

Anyway, I think the American diet as a whole relies far too heavily on sugars or sugar alternatives. Why does everything have to be sweet? frick all that.

MSG manufacturers themselves admit that it addicts people to their products. It makes people choose their product over others, and makes people eat more of it than they would if MSG wasn't added.

Not only is MSG scientifically proven to cause obesity, it is an addictive substance: NICOTINE for FOOD!

You do realize that pretty much all fast food joints put MSG in their food right?

It breaks down into lovely metabolites like methanol and formaldehyde, but no serious connection has been made with cancer.

I wouldn't want to eat a pound of aspartame....but nothing wrong with using it as a sugar replacement as long as it is done in moderation.

Never said that it was right or wrong.

My point was the absurdity of boycotting Cane's over MSG if you are gonna do it while scarfing Taco Bell or Popeyes.

I'm feeling a big letdown after eating my #2 Cane's meal with an extra Cane's sauce.

When it comes to carcinogens, it is all a question of moderation. Only a fraction of aspartame becomes methanol/formaldehyde. Some UV light is good for you, but too much can cause skin cancer...that kind of thing.

And it would take you consuming huge amounts of aspartame in order to to have any really negative effects.

When you eat steak, or any kind of meat, you end up producing methanol/formaldehyde. Does that mean meats should get warning labels about being possible carcinogens?

That post wasn't directed to me, but it makes sense. I stopped eating fast food altogether last year, and I avoid fried food like the plague.

FWIW, I think Raising Cane's tastes great, I was eating there when they first opened, but its unhealthy (but its not like I didn't realize that when I was eating it). I was just curious as to whether or not they have to make it known that the food contains MSG (in case someone has adverse reactions to that stuff).

Genetic deficiency or not, if I eat something in the evening that has a lot of MSG in it, I have bad dreams that night, and wake up the next morning and feel like I have a hangover. Also, I know someone who is highly allergic to MSG, like if he eats it, his throat swells up, he starts sweating real heavy. He's gotten it so bad that a few times when he inadvertently ate something with MSG, he had to to the ER. Too much MSG isn't good for anybody.

It is overpriced and something you can make in your toaster oven at home for about 1/8th of the cost. And don't give me that secret sauce crap either. I have ketchup and mayo at my house and spices too.
