A better question might be how would 10,000 Seals (or whatever the top group is) fare against that Roman Legion if they were armed with the same arms the Romans used?
The modern guys would have the advantage in nutrition/fitness I would think and probably training but the Romans would have experience with the weapons and related tactics.
yeah, this thread seems to pop up every now and then ... gunfire from trained soldiers could mow down quite a few guys with wooden/metal shield and swords ...
10000 romans against 10000 seals would be disastrous for the seals, imo ... romans are used to hand/hand combat (i do not profess to be so much as a novice on warfare) and the tactics used by roman 'squads', i would think, is above anything the seals currently know ...

Which side has Ditka?
There is your answer.

Don't be too quick to award the physical advantage to modern men. Soldiers of the ancient world were easily as strong and fast as the best of today's soldiers. They lived harsh lives and Roman legionaries in particular were hardened and disciplined.
In my opinion, 10k legionaries beats 10k SEALs equally armed in hand to hand. In fact, I think that particular fight would be ugly. Romans win big.

You have to make training all else equal to argue that. We train for different wars now. It's apples and oranges.

I'm inclined to go with this guy on this opinion.

Does this ridiculous question come up that much, maybe you're referring to match ups all together?
Wish I had a yuan for every topic of Romans vs Han that came up on my history site.

Wouldn't "soldiers" today have a distinct size advantage?
Idk about the argument that one side has an advantage because they have fought hand to hand because it all comes down to survival at that point...I think it would be pretty even

1 .50 cal machine gun, each bullet would tear through about 10 people. No way romans could take out an M1 tank also, they would have to be flying A10s or have some sort of AT missiles.

I'm looking for the least amount of seals, SUVs, and weapons to do the job.
1 seal, 1 suv, any gun with armor piercing rounds.
It's the Roman Legion. Just drive around them in circles shooting them one at a time until they're all dead.

As for my original post, names of citizens involved in these situations seem to be released w/out a fuss. When cops are involved, they tend to use the "we won't release their names for fear that they or their family will be in danger" excuse. I'm just curious why it doesn't work both ways.
The average height of a legionnaire was 5'6, according to my brief google search. I still think you are right in that the legion would crush the seals if both sides were armed with roman weapons.

The Italians were often smaller but they never let that slow them down. Navy seals could not attack Romans without training. The discipline and complexity within the cohort kept the men fresh.

All it would take is a handful of leg infantry straight out of Basic with standard infantry weapons. Once the Romans figured out they were outranged and had no answer, they'd break and run in short order.

Do you guys realize what 10,000 men could do? I don't mean hardened well trained roman soldiers, I mean just 10,000 men. If they didn't bug out and went in with just knives they would decimate an 8-14 man squad. Even if they were dug in with machine guns, there is no way that they could come close to keep from getting over run by a whole division of men. Hell, they could circle the wagons but it still wouldn't help.
During Vietnam this is exactly what happen. The Chinese sent so many troops south that they over ran the Americans and took back control of Saigon. Many of them didn't have weapons. It was a suicide mission for a lot of them. The enemy attacked so fast toward the south that it out ran its supply chain, they had to slow down the attack to wait for them to catchup.
In Korea the North Korean soldiers would climb on top of tanks looking anywhere to drop in an explosive. To counter this one tank would radio to another to "scratch his back" then he would use the light machine gun to spray the other tanks shell with bullets to take care of the problem.

The Romans would slaughter them.
Do you think 10,000 Romans would have a chance against 10,000 SEALS if you give them guns that they barely know how to use?

The psychological effect of unknown weapons would have been devastating. Assuming sufficient ammo and range, an infantry squad could kill hundreds, if not thousands before they get anywhere near H2H range. Add to that picking off the leadership, and things would fall apart. Hell, one 60mm mortar round might do the trick. They'd think it was a thunderbolt from Zeus.

I've got one better for you. In Isaiah, the angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. So 1 angel>185,000 Assyrian soldiers.
Isaiah 37:33-38
33“Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not come into this city or shoot an arrow there or come before it with a shield or jcast up a siege mound against it. 34 By the way that he came, by the same he shall return, and he shall not come into this city, declares the Lord. 35 kFor I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for lthe sake of my servant David.”
36 mAnd the angel of the Lord went out and struck down 185,000 in the camp of the Assyrians. And when people arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies. 37 Then Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and returned home and lived at nNineveh. 38 And as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, Adrammelech and Sharezer, his sons, struck him down with the sword. And after they escaped into the land of oArarat, pEsarhaddon his son reigned in his place.

One scout hiding in the tree line with a radio to call in artillery from a 155mm howitzer.

Anything that came from the sky would be an act of a God and they'd all kill themselves.
