A couple of months ago we found out someone attempted to file a fraudulent income tax return using my information. Luckily the IRS notified me in response that they needed an additional tax form and could not complete the return until they received it.

We notified them we had not even filed a claim and steps were taken to make sure our return was the one the IRS processed.

Since then I have been notified our identities were compromised through an accountant we have used in the past. The accounting firm is offering us a Credit Watch protection for one year.

I frown on most civil lawsuits and do not plan to sue them, granted there may not even be a reason to at this point. Later if I find out this breach allows someone to steal our identity and ruin our credit, is this breach actionable against the accounting firm? Is it fair to hold them accountable for this breach? If so, taking them up on this credit protection, does it prevent me from taking any other action?

Curious if anyone else has experienced something similar and share their experience.

Dude literally the exact same thing happened to my whole family. Accounting firm initials AG? We got it sorted out (they tried to change my parents' address and shite) and nothing serious has come about yet. Had to send in an affidavit with my return

Has the accounting firm offered specifics how their network was breached? I would request a detailed account of how it happened and how many people had their info compromised.

Identity theft is a pain in the arse and can cost you a lot of money. You need to start protecting yourself and the first step is to lock them down on specifics in case you proceed with any legal action. It never hurts to consult an attorney.

As a CPA I can tell you this scares the crap out of us. We have taken a bunch of protections over the past few years. Not to say it will never happen to us. We have purchased additional liability insurance in case it does.

Can you sue major retailers, banks, etc, when this happens? I guess you could... but what would be the result?

Why are you scared to out them? They were trying to screw you. Was probably some low level scumbag though who came across your SS# etc however.

Their letter did not say how many were compromised but it was done through a third party accessing their Remote Desktop Protocol. The hackers may have gained access to my name, DOB, salary info, ss#, and banking info.

I do not show any extra activity on my credit report as of today.
