ideas for a one week new england vacation

i started a similar thread a week ago for a trip to mexico, but my wife and i just got very exciting news and decided we would rather travel domestically.
anyhow, we are thinking about a week in new england. for sure we would spend a few days in boston, and traveling from los angeles, would most likely be the city we fly in and out of. other destinations off the top of my head would be cape cod and marthas vineyard, and maybe portland maine.
can you guys help out with a 6-8 day itinerary, where to go, and in what order? also recommendation of taking a train or car rental. for hotels, restaurants etc ill figure that stuff out, i really want to know what cities/towns along the new england coast(or close to) are worth visiting. travel would be september or october.
TIA

I've never been but I would probably go to Maine, eat lobster and check out Acadia national park. That sounds awesome.

You can't visit New England without a stop in New London IMO
Make sure you check out Rose's Cantina in Groton, CT

Look into going to Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. One of the only mountains East of the Rockies to have a treeline, and during that time of the year, the colors will be out in full force. Beautiful area and good beer too. The wife and I went there last year, stayed at the Mountain view Grand Resort. Highly recommended. They have all sorts of activities during the day and night.

Block Island, RI
Similar to Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, but not as extensively developed. More locals, less tourists. It's a quaint, laid back place. Not a whole lot "to do", but a great place to chill out and unwind on a nice beach. Good restaurants. I live in the Deep South and we go every summer.
There is an airport in Westerly RI (think "wings") that has puddle jumpers out there. You can get to Westerly by train from pretty much anywhere in NE. Fly into Boston, spend a few days and head out to Block Island.
ETA I just saw your Sept - Oct timeframe. I would probably stay on the mainland and do some "leaf peeping". But a couple of days on and island or a Maine coastal town would be a nice highlight.

Just returned from an east coast trip last week. I would not recommend Portland other than flying out of. If you want to experience Maine coast go to bar harbor, or if you do not want to go that far north, you can go to boothbay for a Maine experience.
I went to boothbay and not bar harbor; but from everyone I spoke with, bar harbor is the much better choice of the two.
Boothbay offers scenic routes to drive, plenty of east coast dining, downtown shopping area on the harbor, and excursions ie whale watching etc....

We just took this exact trip a few weeks ago. We spent two days in Boston and four days in Acadia National Park. Do the Freedom Trail in Boston, go to Walden Pond and the Minute Man NP, catch a Red Sox game. In Maine, go to L. L. Bean just because, eat a Lobster roll at Red's, and hike and bike around Acadia. Stop at Portsmouth, NH for an evening, the downtown is gorgeous. Eat on the water somewhere.

Spend at least 2 days in Boston (so much to do and see)I personally would end with Boston on your trip; you can spend anywhere from 1 to 2 days in Cape Cod (i would start there or be the second to last stop before Boston). Cape Cod is nice but there are so much more to do during the fall foliage that you might want to rethink that idea.
IF you are doing this in the Sept/Oct time check out the fall foliage and try to hit some of the peak time. It is absolutly amazing...I want to go back and do it by train if possible, but we ended up driving. Driving will let you find different and small towns to enjoy so rent and drive.
If you can and if you like hiking/sights/nature. I would say Acadia National park is a must. It was just so amazing. I would do anything and everything to get there. Spend at least 2 days there if you can. Then I would find some back roads to drive and do some fall foliage roads, pick up a mazagine or google them. There is a winery (Bar Harbor Cellars) that has some blueberry wine and other local wines to taste, they are only open from Memorial Day to Columbus Day 10-5.
I am jealous of your trip but enjoy it. Let me know if you have any questions.

Great recommendations, looks like Acadia is a must do. I've been to Boston once(my wife hasn't) so we will be there at least 2 days.
Only issue I'm having is deciding the order of things. should I skip Martha's Vineyard and just do cape cod?

I haven't been to Martha Vineyard but did enjoy Cape Cod. Cape Cod you can go up into a light house and eat on the beach and just relax.
First figure out what is important to you what would you be okay skipping? I hardly ever plan a time with hotels unless it is a must and I dont normal care where I sleep. I would look into a hotel at Acadia and Boston and then just let the other days play out as needed.
Here is what I would do based on what I like:
Fly in and start my drive to Acadia spend about 2 days there (1 night maybe at the min depending on the time I get there on day 1 for Acadia), spend about 1-2 days (go on the county fall foliage roads) driving to Cape Cod spend a full day there possible 2 (again with the 1 night statement) then go back to Boston and finish up my trip.
Let me know whatelse I can do to help!
