Marriages fail because of laziness and stupidity not because of a preternatural instinct to bang everything.

The wife's best friend is in a situation exactly like this right now and is miserable as frick, mostly because the guy is a huge a-hole (to clarify, it's her fault for staying if she's unhappy, too). Makes me look like a fricking saint by comparison, and makes the wife thankful for who I am.

It's not that big of a deal if you dont have kids, but having kids outside of marriage in this country can lead you down a road of nightmares. A huge problem you may run into without being married is you cannot put her on your insurance or the other way around. So if one of you loses it youre fricked. You also have no rights to see her or be around her if she is interdicted or critically injured.

Im dealing with a situation right now like that. One of my uncles good friends lived with the same woman for 30 years, but they never got married. IN La we dont have common law marriage so thats not in play. She started to get old and lose her mind a little. Well her kid from before they got together had her committed to a home and he has no rights to see her because that kid doesnt like him. So he's been battling like hell in the courts to get some kind of visitation privilege but its tearing him apart and its tough as hell to watch. He's miserable and cant see the woman he loves more than anything. He constantly says he shouldve just gotten married.

Why lie and say you are married when legally you are not?
Just say you are together. Never got people who wear rings but aren't actually married.
And doesn't common law vary state to state? Meaning some states don't even necessarily recognize them for legal issues?

Correct. Louisiana expressly declines to recognize common law marriage.

I just don't see it as laziness. A man can bust his arse for a woman, and she will leave his hard working arse on a whim. Have seen it too many times. Women always look for the "better deal".
