It was believed that by not having a +/- system hurt our academic image so they implemented one. Apparently, most prestigious universities do this?

It certainly gives more accuracy now that an 80 and an 89 are no longer the same. It is a .6 difference in GPA so the higher grade is now distinguished.

It also forces students to not blow off the final for certain classes. For example, if I'm going into a final with a 97, I have no incentive to study as it is pretty unlikely I'm going to drop my grade below an A. But now, I have that 4.3 to fight for, and if I don't study I could even fall to a 3.7 for that class.

Yeah, no shite. All it does is reward the nerds and fricks everyone else over. Ole Miss started this crap the year after I graduated, and I was happy to avoid it.

Still claiming to be a grad student in a PhD program at LSU?

fail, moron.

Oh, and your old grade point average didnt change...nor should it matter a few years post graduation. You would know that if you even had a degree.

It will allow more grade inflation to slowly creep in
, especially for non-majors classes. Whereas before the pressure was heavy to award everyone who basically showed up and put forth a bona fide effort an A, or a B, pretty soon they will expect a B+ or higher.

Yes, you can get above a 4.0, but you can also get a 3.7 for what used to be an A, therefore it all averages out. Overall averages will not be raised or lowered:

bullshite. Aside from a mega nerd, I've never heard of anyone in the long term benefitting from this. It will almost certainly lower GPAs. No one is excited to get a B+ since they just missed the A, and now this puts them even further from achieving a 4.0 than it did when he had the 89 and had negotiating room this time last year.

So who decides what is a minus, regular, or plus? Does each professor set up his own cutoffs. The cutoffs in the link are just hypotheticals.

Up to the professors. They can make it so a 90 is an A-, 90.01-99.99 an A, and 100 an A+ if they want to.

It is very reasonable to presume that there will be more A- than A+. Not many people are averaging 99% cumulative scores in their classes. But many ARE doing whatever it takes to barely make an A.

Not to mention that a large majority of tests have it to where if you frick up on one answer, you're out of the 97%+ range on the test, giving you simply an A. To get an A+ the course has to be either easy, you have to be a prodigy, or have no social life. This will lower everyone's GPA who has really any social competence who is not a prodigy.

You seriously don't understand this, do you?

Most GPAs will go down. There will be very few A+, while A and A- will likely be roughly equal in number. I expect that B-D will be more or less equally spaced (3 points per step). What this means is that most GPAs will go DOWN. Only someone who makes 98s and 99s in the majority of classes will see an overall increase. The rest of folks will all of a sudden see that 90 they clawed for worth 3.7 instead of 4.

The real headache for the professors is now instead of 4 points on the scale kids will try to get bumped up, there are now 12 of them. Three times as many kids trying to convince the prof to bump them a half point to get the A instead of an A-, or a B- instead of a C+.

I don't think so ... I graduated in 1991 so am not affected lol but someone posted a link recently ... from the LSU website.

What I'm wondering is how many students with TOPS will go on probation or lose it ... sorry but I think a C should be a C. Or an A an A and a B a B.

From my program's director and multiple department chairs at work, I assure you its true. LSU has their recommended grade ranges, but professors are free to set their criteria however they see fit. Very similar to how they could previously set the A-D ranges however (Mokeba, I want to say, had an 88 as an A instead of the usual 90).
