i need to get a new cell phone. att store want $400 for a new iphone (screw that!).
i haven't bought a new phone in sometime and i know the industry has changed. what's the smart way to upgrade a phone now?

Any phone you get will more than likely need a data plan to go with it. So if you want a phone and to be cheap, prepaid is the way to go. You can find those at any mall and most gas stations.
If you have access to wifi, you can just buy an iPod touch and get a free texting and calling app

going to cost to you more than you want baw. unless you end up buying an older model phone. if unhappy with your carrier, you could try going to a different one and they will offer you upwards of $650 to switch and use that towards your new phone. happy hunting.

The discount for Not going under contract is worth buying the phone outright, from a fiscal standpoint.

I bought a Motorola moto x for like $300, without contract And unlocked. That way all you have to do is put in a new sim card if you want to change carriers, or if you go overseas and buy a plan over there.

I recommend a Samsung Galaxy. Mainly bc you won't have to get a new one in a 6 months, they are waterproof, and it's just a better phone. but warning, the transition from iphone to not iphone can be rough.
But most importantly,Get it from bestbuy, NOT your service provider. Verizon or atnt will try and make you pay more.
