I made the decision to go sober today.

Probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Did a lot of self reflection with my best friend and finally admitted that I had a drug and alcohol problem and I’ve been simply masking a lot of underlying issues. For those who have done this, what are some things you did to ensure you stayed away? I set up a therapy appointment already and stay in the gym, I just want to ensure this is a lifetime ordeal because I almost got consumed by drug use and don’t want to ever be at that point again. Thanks for any advice y’all may have

Hit the gym
Focus on your diet and how you eat
Get a hobby or start a new instrument like guitar

Get into a program. Success is about daily maintenance and accountability. Also, remember if you encounter setbacks… it is not the end of the world or your sober journey. Setbacks are normal, keep your head up. Keep moving forward. You’ve made a great choice. Congratulations on the beginning of your new life.

Firstly you should go have a drink to celebrate. All jokes aside congrats and find a hobby, do you enjoy shooting or perhaps fishing? Stay occupied nonetheless

I’ve been considering getting back into fishing lately, only time consuming hobby I’ve really got right now is the gym whenever I’m not in classes, that is a positive at least is that school takes a lot of my time up

There's going to be a void that will need to be filled with healthy stuff. There will be discomfort and difficult situations that you will have to navigate (just because you're sober doesn't mean everything is always going to be great and go the way you want). If you're really an addict or alcoholic you may find it very difficult to get and stay sober on your own. If you're struggling ask for help
Eta I'm into bike riding and AA . I even attended a Bible study tonight which is rather unbelievable considering where I was a year and a half ago

You should do cocaine about it.

Looking at it this way is pretty daunting. Today is all that matters.

I didn’t really quit drinking. But I was training for an extensive hike and the 12 weeks of training I think I had 1 or 2 beers. I didn’t really miss it at all. Congratulations

Good luck.

Good luck, Baw. I know it is still kind of early in your journey, but you should take the money you are no longer wasting on substance abuse, and lock it down for retirement. Let that money work for you.

I can only say find things that keep you away from alcohol and drugs, diet, hobbies, non drinking friends, etc. Best of luck.

I did a detox and started hitting meetings. I really don’t care for the 12 steps but I can’t do this alone and it’s the easiest way to surround yourself with people in recovery. You have to go in beast mode brother. You don’t have to live that way anymore. We are no longer slaves to a bottle or a bag of powder! You’ve got this shite…..

I think that doing this is very important for people in recovery, particularly early on. Many people get a good feeling just from helping others in some way and this helps to replace some of the missing exhilaration that was brought on by the chemicals.

I’d talk to a doctor and do some research. If you are a serious drinker, withdraws could be bad. I don’t know if there is anything out there to help, but just be careful. Wish you the best.

I am not tee total but I do often have 1/2 month breaks and then have a massive night of binge drinking that gives me the hangover from hell and then I repeat the cycle.
Might sound odd, but I found treating myself with more junk/comfort food at the times I'm craving it most often helps as a substitute of sorts. I know I'm eating things I like that are bad for me but I won't get a hangover the next day. Also going to the gym is another motivator to keep me off it.

I'll preface my statement with I haven't had a drink in so many years, I've forgotten how long it's been.
You've made a difficult decision and a good one, but that's not the hardest thing. The hardest thing will be be stay committed to the decision. There will be many temptations along the way. Do not become apathetic.
Good Luck and Congrats!
