Y'all beat me to it. WaMu was one of the banks that failed in the 2008 financial crisis. I had a 5% CD with them or something like that.

Calling the police was over the top. But I pulled my money out of compass bank one time because they wanted to put a hold on a 4k CASHIERS check. I see regions do this all the time when we write a check from one of our companies to another.

They hold large direct deposits too. Found that out during tax return season

I know someone who got burned for about $300k on a check. They wired the check-deposit funds to someone, then the deposit check turned up bogus. Took over a week for it to come back.

It still takes some time to make sure, even with computers, especially if it is a foreign check.

How would you suggest he get his money back?

This holding the check thing happens from time to time at our bank as well. It all depends on who is working the drive thru when my wife goes. She gets a large 4 figure bonus check every month at work and its a crap shoot from month to month on if the check will be held or not.

Sometimes if they try to hold it, she will go to her employers bank and cash it and then deposit the cash.

Check kiters cause these problems, not the banks.

do think it is silly in this day and age to have a hold on checks, especially for something so paltry as a few ten thousand

It's pretty obvious you're extremely knowledgeable on this subject, so , please tell me why "in this day and age banks should hold a check"
