Probably because they felt as Rangers they were more accomplished than being compared to pog 1st Sgt. I was no Ranger myself and cannot speak of that pride, I just worked for some.

Disbanded. Some went to 10mtn 3rd brigade and some went to Benning. I showed up after their deployment to Afghanistan and was transferred to 3rd battalion

In 2005 snipers were shooting people from the top of the Superdome... everybody knows that.

In some units they got folded into RSTA. I was MI (still am, but not really) and we really benefited from some high quality folks coming in.

Noice. I had 2 1SG's who did not mind being called top. Both were Rangers.

Thanks for your commitment brother. I know you had it rough!

Well, I've been around all sorts of troops over the years. In a company there is only 1 E-8. So, with all the "sergeants" being thrown around in meetings and events, "Top" made it unambiguous. Junior enlisted tended to say "First Sergeant" because they were fresh from IET, but E6s and E7s in the company almost all called the 1SG "Top" - as well as the commissioned officers, too.

We even traditionally called Master Sergeants (usually a staff position at Battalion or Brigade) "Top."

Even in infantry units. Especially in infantry units.

Not in 2005. I was at Speicher with them in 2009, but I was with a special unit (TF ODIN). I just know that LRS-D essentially went away in 2005. We got some of those folks as they came out of those units.

I don't disagree with you every leader feels different about some military customs and traditions. The ones I worked for wanted to be called 1st Sgt. I did not care one way or the other when I made rank.

I was with Jared Monti and those guys in Drum and Afghanistan. I use Monti's name for reference for you since you might know who that is.

I'm familiar with Monti as a MOH recipient. As with much of Afghanistan, that was pretty hairy. I never went to Afghanistan.
