When did the rules change and people began riding with traffic? I thought the rule was ride against traffic so you can watch the cars coming.

I live along the Natchez trace and always come across riders riding in the center of the lane, riding with traffic and have no idea when cars are coming.

Because we want to slow you down so you're late for work.

Then learn how to turn your fat neck around and watch for cars approaching.

Rules have never been to ride against traffic. Bicycles are supposed to obey the same rules of the road as cars.

However, is this type of riding actually safer than following traffic flow? In a word, no. There are a number of risks associated with salmoning:
First, cars pulling out of driveways or turning from an intersection are not looking for traffic coming the wrong way. They could pull out in front if you and have no idea you were coming.
Also, you approach traffic at a much higher speed while salmoning. For example: if you are riding at 15mph and a car comes up from behind at 35mph, the approaching speed is 20mph. If you and the car were coming head-on though, the closing speed is 50mph.
One study, dryly called “Risk Factors for Bicycle-Motor Vehicle Collisions at Intersections”, found that riding the wrong way is three times as dangerous as riding with traffic, and for kids the risk is seven times greater.
Finally, riding the wrong way is against the law, so if you are in an accident it will be your fault.

You have to yield to us. Deal with it.

Ugh. One of You people.

I'll never understand the logic. Oh look I'm on a 10 pound frame going 10 mph, let me ride in the road with 1,000+ pound cars and trucks flying by at 45+mph just 3 feet away.

Who cares if there's a sidewalk RIGHT THERE. I'm going to be a jackass with no regards for my own safety or the safety of others, I'm going to ride my little bike right here in the road just to cause a backup and or a wreck. Just because I can.

It's illegal to ride your bike on a sidewalk...unless it is specifically designated as a multi-use path.

Just because something is legal doesn't mean it's the smartest way to do something.

Self preservation should kick in and say, hey. Maybe I should get my slow arse and peddle my way to the safety of the sidewalk. Rather than have Sideview mirrors coming within a foot of my face going 45mph.

I stand by my statement. frick cyclist.

You're a lot safer in your spandex suit on the side walk, than in the lane of traffic with trucks and cars ten times your size flying by you at 3 times your speed flying by just an arms reach away.
