What was that whales tail area seen in the last photos? Unknown? Doesn't seem to be obvious here

What's the current scientific thoughts on whether or not Pluto has an atmosphere?

I don't think the tail was in the last images - I believe it will be captured in the flyby images on 7/14.

Regardless, they don't know what any of the dark areas are yet.

Of note: 2 giant canyons on Charon. Much larger than the Grand Canyon from what I have read.

It has a thin atmosphere that is currently in a gaseous state. New Horizons will look back towards the Sun after it passes Pluto and use the sunlight to analyze the atmosphere.

Pluto is moving away from the Sun right now, and in the relatively near future the atmosphere will freeze again and fall back to the surface.

This whole thing is cool as hell.

New Horizons even has some of Tombaugh's ashes on it.

I'm excited.

Why aren't there any stars in the pictures?

There are none that are even close besides our own sun.

Because their special effects team is dumber than a box of rocks.

While true, thats not the reason. Stars are filtered out in these photos to enhance resolution.

According to the JPL website, it'll probably be Wednesday before we get anymore photos. Basically the probe is hunkering down and focusing all energy towards data collection. Should have closest approach about this time tomorrow, then will send a signal to Earth around 7pm signifying that it made it through the system. First pictures should follow, and it'll take several months before all the data is transmitted back to Earth.

If you're a science geek, the next few months should be pretty fantastic as the full resolution data comes in.
